MAX/MSP How proficient are you? How will you use MFL?

While there are already numerous MAX patches freely available, oftentimes they are not built optimally - so you never know what you might get. It would be nice to know what kind of users we can expect to get patches from and who will take part in this "extend".

I've owned Max/MSP for a few months now although I haven't really built anything significant. I think this is mostly because I just get frustrated trying to build things from scratch. Having Live as a starting point for patching should make things alot more interesting though.

I plan to re-build most of my synths and effects made in max/msp, and make them as M4L devices.
Looking forward of starting using them in a host enviroment.

Most likely I'll just buy M4L and use patches built by others. I am especially excited about using visual stuff (possibly in place of Modul8)... but ya I just can't see being able to focus long enough to build something myself.

I think integrating Max and Live is just pure f*#!ing genius though!

Max for Live

Post by smclellan » Fri Feb 06, 2009 10:18 pm

I was a proficient user of Max from 97-2003. When I heard the news that Max would be integrated into Live, I was ecstatic. Now I can build all the uttility plugins I need for the extensive MIDI work that do.

Can't wait.

I've never used it but am interested in it. I'd probably use other people patches to be honest though. I haven't got the patience to go about building things like that from scratch. I just want useable tools in live.

I need to see what it can or what it's capable of before I'll fork out for it. It may not be of any benefit to me.

I'm thinking that the point of Max for Live is to build things that are very customized for my equpiment or my way of work. Might not be relevant to a lot of others. I gladly share stuff, though, whenever possible.

But making synths or audio effects - nah. I think most stuff is already available as (free) plugins.

Max for me is primarily a layer between my Lemur and Live. Hoping to get the APC40 when it's released. My Max for Live stuff will probably focus on building "performance systems", generative, noodle stuff bridging these hardware controllers and Live.

Yes, thats how I see M4L as well.

For me the major drawback to Live is the mouse, and M4L will let me interface more directly with my hardware/software combo.

I'm not gonna be prototyping synths or FX, I'd rather be playing with them. My stuff will be specifically focussed on my hardware and my way of working, but I'll gladly share. M4L is really about a way to get a level of personaiized functionality out of Live and my hardware for me.

interesting.. So you don't see a large user library building up? I kind of forsee it becoming like the Reaktor library with a few really great developers making synths/efx etc. Do you think I'm wrong in this assumption?

this is also what i am happy about.

i have also been dreaming up all kind of motion / light / weight / pressure
sensor ideas for triggering and controlling all kinds of things in a massive
live set... this will definately make it more interesting.

You're speaking out of my mind. Having control over everything with the Lemur, especially notes was a wish for a very very long time. Maybe I'll use M4L mainly as a bridge between Live and OSC, as I feel better writing C code than dragging boxes when it comes to more complexity. However I WILL make more patches than just the OSC bridge in M4L and no longer will I be thinking "I would really like to..." but "Now I will...."

:D

No.

But I think you'll get much more out of that library if you aren't scared to get under the hood a bit, unplug and replug.
