Mac Peeps-Ever use Garage Band.........for anything?
Mac Peeps-Ever use Garage Band.........for anything?
Do you ever use Garage Band? A quick go to? Does it have a place anywhere in your creative space?
Or does it never get opened, never updated, never even contemplated?

I've owned Logic for at least three years before buying Live 3, so I haven't really used it, as all it's best features are from Logic.
I gave a good friend who always helps me with my vehicles my old dual 2.5 G5, and he's in love with Garage Band. He's very computer illiterate, but can figure it out, and it does have some killer instruments in the Expansion packs.
If I didn't own Logic, I might think about using it as a second DAW for live performance, IE no gaps in audio while Live loads the next set.

How Garageband Saved My Ass
Got my first location recording job a two hour drive away from home - and I failed my driving test two weeks before I was due to go. My dad kindly offered to drive me and the mics, mixer, imac etc etc to the client, a school. The job was recording a musical written by one of the teachers, who was actually a really accomplished musician who was due to take the recording I was going to make, to promote the musical with a view to getting it on stage and touring it.
Anyway, I got down there, set up, everything was plugged in and switched on - except I realised I forgot the Logic dongle.
FUUUUCK!!!
While the cast of the musical were warming up I felt pale. Seriously, there didn't seem to be any way out - all these people who've been practicing for this moment, my Dad sitting outside in the car waiting for the drive back home.
I desperately tried to think of all of the ways I could still record and eventually I realised Garageband was bundled with iLife! Up until this point I'd never even fired it up, never mind dome a multi track recording with a digital mixer through it.
So I had to struggle with the Yamaha drivers, get a signal routed into Garageband and - there it was - a waveform appearing in the Garageband arrange area!
LIFE!!! IT LIIIIIIVES!!
Garageband was capturing everything it should have, just like a grown up DAW. It performed perfectly, no glitches, crashes, anything - the teacher got his promo recorded, kids got their copies, I got paid and my Dad got treated to a nice little bite to eat on the way home.
Since that day I've always capitalised Garageband out of respect

Yes, you can export as ringtones for the iPhone. I've used it when I wanted to just quickly noodle on a piano melody, since it launches by default with a piano sound already loaded up ready to go.

I updated GB this morning (iLife 09) and I broke it. I had to erase it and reinstall it from the applications disk. With the 09 version there is some talk that the guitar amps have been upgraded and apparently sound pretty good now. I haven't used it yet cause I think its still broke, can't see the POD Studio GX. I might try the Alesis iO/14.
@ markoos.... I teach at a school that is stacked with imac's and an FM radio station run via itunes, but no one to teach GB. I am going to make myself needed

I used to use it as a satellite AU host on my G5 until Mainstage was bundled with logic studio. My cousin uses GB a whole lot and loves it, makes some pretty cool ambient type tunes with it that he uses to accompany his static art exhibitions.
