OT-SXSW 2009 Recommendations

Post by dhilsabeck » Sun Mar 01, 2009 10:33 am

Hey All,

I just found out I get to go to SXSW this year. :D

I was hoping to get some recommendations as I have not heard of 98% of this year's acts.

Last year's highlights for me were Nosaj Thing and Tech N9ne, just for some background info. However, I am down for shows featuring any genre, as long as it is impressive.

The list is long, but if you're feeling bored and want to help a brother out, here it is: http://sxsw.com/music/shows/schedule

Many thanks in advance,

Drew

My old band, Autons, told me they were due to play SXSW 2009. However, I have since found out that there is a band from Texas also called Autons who are confirmed for SXSW. So, I think my old band may have been pulling my leg :D

I am going to bring this up with them when I see them next. If my old band ARE playing then I would recommend seeing them: they have got much better since I left :D

The UK Autons, my old band, play electro-rock-n-roll. The Texas Autons play metal, apparantly.

Cool.

Booka Shade/M.A.N.D.Y. - definitely.

The Decemberists - not everyone's cup of tea, but if you like that kind of music, they put on an entertaining show

Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip - it'll be a short set, but fantastic. Check out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoN6XfyQsr4

Primal Scream - can be outstanding, can be complete arses, pot luck...

Little Boots - definitely.

Don't bother with The Proclaimers or Razorlight.

There's lots of stuff there which I really like, but not yet caught live like Evil Nine, Longview, The Hold Steady and Crystal Method. So I can't really recommend them as I haven't seen them live, but I hereby register my envy at the chance to see them...

Looks great - have fun!

Thanks for the recommendations.

Autons? Dr. Who??? Anyways, they don't appear to be pulling your leg. Apparently they will be there.

Just noticed DJ Craze will be there as well. He might be fun to see in person.

Cheers

If I didn't have a friend's wedding to attend I'd be doing this stuff instead. I helped to make his recent album - Home - and it's the bestest.

@ bosonHavoc
Thanks for the Dub Step at Barcelona tip. I've been listening to a little bit of that stuff recently ("Octacon" by Reso on one of Mary Anne Hobbs' recent mixes caught my attention and subsequent interest in the genre) and I've been wondering how DS would sound on big loud speakers...

it sounds or should i say feels freaking great lol

i have not been to Barcelona on dub step night yet but i'm sure it cooks
Plush has been doing the Dub step on wednesdays for a while.
plush is a club the size of my bedroom but they cram like 5 or 6 subs in that tiny place.. its freaking balls deep bass lol.
a while back we played a show at plush before the DJ's so we got to pump through all those subs....mmmmmm we opened with one of are songs that has some deep sub bass... it was so nice to hear it they way it was intended.

Any chance of being able to see this without a badge?

From the director...
'if you don't have a festival badge, there is no way to purchase a ticket in advance but the the Paramount and Convention Center are large enough that we anticipate being able to accommodate everyone who wishes to attend... I believe that tickets are $10 so just show up at one of the screenings and wait in line for admission.'
