How many tiBook users are also using a 7200 rpm ext. firewire HD ? I just recieved an 80 gb one and it sure sounds like Ableton is running much better. Any else doing the same and have any comments ?

hey man, could you do the "Live Performance Test" thing with and without the FireWire drive and post the results in this thread? i have a 550 and it runs like shit. i'd love to hear your results.

well, I think the improvements are not that noticeable just running the test. You have to have a lot of samples in the pool to notice that Ableton is not so sluggish and screen redraws are quicker. Sample triggering also sounds tighter. Also, when I run VST plug ins it seems to be able to handle them much better.

For example here are results testing one of my tracks with about 150 clips in the pool:

running one of my songs running samples only off of a 7200 rpm external firewire HD using e-magic emi 2/6.

Here are the rest of my test results but there isn't anything that noticeable:

Computer: Apple ti Book
OS: 9.2.2
CPU: 550
RAM: 512
Soundcard: E-magic emi 2/6
Ableton Live: 1.5

Test 1: 6%
Test 2: 43%

using Soundmanager:

Test 1: 6%
Test 2: 41 %

OS 10.1.4 results:

Test 1: 5%
Test 2: 42%

using e-magic emi 2/6

Test 1: 6%

using Soundmanager

OS X 10.1.5

Test 1: 5%

Sounds about right. I use a OWC Mercury Elite firewire drive and I don't notice any performnace difference. I am curious to try using a RAM disk like the FAQs suggest when my Tibook gets back from the doctor. Jammed disk in the combo drive. There goes my reliability theory.
