4 gigs RAM causes Freezing, looses Serial number...

Post by senator adam » Sat Mar 21, 2009 9:18 pm

Ableton Live 7.014:

I have quite a weird bug that has been causing me TONS of headaches..

It seems that when I have 2 gigs ram in my computer, everything runs smooth. Yet, when I have 4 gigs of ram in it, Live, or actually the entire system, will randomly freeze every once in a while and I have to restart.

Every 3 or 4 freezes, I'll get an error message when starting Live back up saying something like "Apparently the document you were working on was made in a previous version of Live etc..." Sorry, I haven't copied the actual error yet. It then prompts me to re-enter my serial number. I'll have to re-scan for my vsts and everything, just as if I re-installed Live and all settings are default. I have reformatted my harddrive, re-installed everything, and delayed an album release because of this. I have had to have Ableton refresh my serials as well because I enter them so many times. I thought that since I re-installed Windows, it might be ok, but it seems to be 4 gigs of RAM that causes it. Anyone have this problem?

This has also corrupted very important projects I have worked on, making them useless. Luckily I backup almost everything I do... I still loose lots of work in between backups though when this happens.

Also, when the serial number issue happens, after I enter and start using Live again it takes a second or 2 for the song to start after I hit play. It worked fine before. This happens each time the serial number issue comes up, and I have to uninstall, and then re-install... And then, I'm out of serial numbers and I have to contact Ableton again to get it refreshed.

**EDIT** - Figured this one out. My soundcard settings get reset each time this happens. I'm not getting the sound delay now since I corrected the settings. All the other issues still happen though.

Sounds like bad RAM.
