m-audio and ableton don't seem to get along

my new setup is live 4 and firewire audiophile. but is seems that live is unable to recieve the spdif in from the audiophile. is it possible that m-audio is writing drivers for this problem at this moment or is this a sign of future problems to come between m-audio and ableton.

does anyone care?

Hi, I don't have the same m-audio device as you've got, but i have a firewire410 and i have the same problem. But i don't think there're any problems with your soundcard. Apparently a lot of people are having problems with their ASIO drivers. Do you think that could be the case with your problem? I think either ableton or m-audio have to come up with a new driver or patch. Hmm unfortunately.

My experience with M-Audio is that their driver support is very poor. I had one of their USB Transit interfaces that was not seen by my PB on startup. Any other USB device has no problem. I spoke to several people at M-Audio tech support and I was told that they were aware of the problem and they are working on a new driver. After six months and numerous follow-up calls to them, there still is not a new driver available. Every time I called they told me it should be ready within a week. I got a refund for the thing instead of continuing to wait.

I wasted my time with two M-Audio soundcards before I realized I was never going to have any luck with their products on my particular setup. I always had horrible problems with power dropouts between the card and my laptop where the driver would release itself. This really sucks in the middle of a live performance.

I feel where you M-Audio owners are coming from, and I sincerely hope that they listen to your needs and give you some stable drivers.

one of the first soundcard devices from m-audio, the QUATTRO, had extreme driver problems. an adequate fix has never been made, and the attitude at m-audio supposedly was that they wish they could have just started over. hence the low prices for the m-audio quattro... it just doesn't work properly.

looks like they've never really gotten any better at writing drivers....

I was thinking about getting the new firewire interface 1814 to use with Ableton. having read the replys in this topic I'm no longer to sure, any advise on using this firewire interface or any suggestions. thankyou

I've had so many issues with their midi device drivers that I gave up on them. I had considered the 410 but too have seen many people with issues as well as my midi issues I had.
If you're considering the 410 I'd look to the Edirol FA101 and for the 1814 you're very close in price to the MOTU 828mk2, which many have had issue under Windows in the past but I've found to be now very stable and has a better i/o config(more outs). If you want a very nice quality firewire interface and can swing it the Metric Halo i/o is very good and I'm sure the RME Fireface will be as well.

in controrario, I dont have any problem with the m-audio and my ibook, all work great with live 4 .... I have also one Novation remote audio , I use the 2 card in same time ( input for record the synth or for external effect, output to m-audio audiophile firewire....) the latency are quit easy to setup

i really enjoying by Live 4 .....

4.01 was running fine until i updated the firewire 410 drivers. after that live was crashing every 10 seconds. after rolling back the 410 drivers from ver.1028 to ver.1015 things were fine again.

I'm running a 410 with my powerbook. The 4 in 10 out thing is a bit of a con as you cannot use the spdif input simultaneously with the analogue. Also if you do want to use the spdif input you have to set the 410 to external sync......other than that the unit is solid....

wow,i didn't expect this kind of reviews about the m-audio devices...you got me into some serious thinking now...i was about to order audiophile usb or quattro usb next week...does this problems occure on pc's or mac?
until now,to be sure what i'm buying,i've found many comments,but i red only good stuff about the audiophile
the last thing i want is live crashing during a session due to th audio device

Sorry to said that, but i'm happy with my usb quattro from m-audio, and the tech support over there was great, they did tell me how to fix a midi probleme, and now, live 4 and my quattro with my PB on osx3.5 are rock solide,,,,,,,,,,,,you know , if you wana be stable, get a MAC , and stay away from asio,,,,,,,,,,,:)

i use live 4 with my m-audio firewire 1814 and it totally kicks a$$ in every which way. i have had minimal problems with the 1814, and what few i have had ended up not being caused by the 1814 itself.

it stays cool (unlike some other 'pro' audio i/o's ive had that get so hot you can cook on them, specially the usb ones). the drivers are 'good enough' (considering everyone gripes about 'something' due to their drivers). the latency is first class for firewire. and m-audio does a good job of fixing problems, even if it isn't caused by them. they have great tech support and good craftsmanship.

don't let these few that have had problems with m-audio scare you away, cause for each one that complains about it there are 10 out there that are very happy. and of course the audiophile is going to suck, it is their 'cheap' student model. get the 1814 and you won't be disappointed. it is still a brand new product that's getting its feet wet, and it will get better quickly with updates and time.

my system:
windows xp (*sighs*, not much choice)
3.2 p4
1 gig ram
2 wd raptor drives
fully tweaked custom built daw

my live setup is usually:
-- 1 impulse track
-- 1 kontakt track
-- 1 reaktor track
-- 3 absynth tracks
-- 2 pro-53 tracks
-- 2 fm7 tracks
-- 2 guitar rig tracks
-- 5 misc. audio tracks
-- 1 delay return track
-- 1 reverb return track
-- 1 misc. return track

i run live at ~60% cpu load on full throttle (some times the guitar rig patches drive it up to ~80%) and never hit the disk overload or glitch with the 1814 and these specs. i use a buffer size of 256, use to have 64 or 128 but started getting pops during recording on full track setups. so now i use a safe 256 which still gives me only trivial latency (about 8ms). i use 24 bit with 48000 samplerate. i do this in a live setting and have never crashed. i have only crashed 2 times while working in my studio and it was due to vst plugins and me messing around with crazy shit.

Been using my M-audio Revo 7.1 with Sonar for about a year, Reason too, and now recently with Live 2, 3, and 4 with no problems whatsoever. My only complaint is that they don't have WDM drivers for it but the ASIO drivers work fine.
