Live 8 - Extreme latency and pops and clicks on all VSTi's

Post by disciple27 » Sun Apr 05, 2009 4:22 pm

Just Installed Live 8, reinstalled, rebooted, updated asio drivers, etc. etc.....

Live 8 is experiencing extreme (Can you say "unplayable?" latency as well as pops and clicks on ALL 3rd party Vsti plugins.

I've moved the plug in folder, rescanned, changed the path in Live 8, same problem. I've upgraded the asio driver as well. I'm running an Open labs Neko TSE (Intel III Xeon 2.82 core 2 processor(upgraded), 4 gigs ram). The audio interface is a Presonus Firebox and the settings are at 2ms latency which yields a buffer size of 176 samples in Ableton.

Live 7.0.10 runs GREAT with these settings. So does Reaper, Reason 4, Cubase, and Forte (a vsti host program). Live 8 experiences massive latency problems as well as pops and clicks on the audio. The only time I do NOT get pops and clicks is by setting the Presonus to 12ms latency, yielding a buffer size of 528 samples in Ableton...But at that point, the vsti's become unplayable due to the extreme latency which occurs.

I've tried loading previous Live 7 sets as well as starting Live 8 sets from scratch..Same issue with Live 8.

So...on the SAME machine...Live 7.0.10..Reaper...Reason 4...Cubase...Forte...All work well with the Presonus drivers, both the shipped V1.2 as well as the upgraded V. 2.46, which I just installed for the sake of troubleshooting Live 8.

What's worth mentioning is that Live 8's bundled instruments (Operator etc.) all play back fine, no harsh latency, no audio pops and clicks, nothing....Only the 3rd party vsti's give this problem (and yes, they are paid for registered versions, not cracks... :-)

And did I mention that Live 7.0.10 works FINE...even now after installing Live 8??

Anyone....Any ideas? Any similar issues with latency and /or pops and clicks in Live 8?

Ok...Check this out...

If I run a midi set with a 3rd party vsti....and then add an Ableton instrument or 2...EVERTHING has latency...

Any track I enable to play, I experience tremendous latency...However as soon as I DELETE the 3rd party vsti, ALL of the remaining Ableton instruments trigger very normally and snappy and without the harsh latency....(I'm using drum racks and operator for this test)....

.....But if I ADD a 3rd party vsti again...The latency returns for ALL the channels.....

.....And I'm not even troubling the asio driver settings or the buffer size....

What gives......????

Just to be clear...The operating system is really WIn XP Home Edition that has been "tweaked" by Open Labs for music applications, not unlike the standard Win XP tweaks that PC users do that can be found all over the net....

I'm actually sequencing midi tracks in Abelton using virtual instruments...vsti's...So i"m not talking about using plugins on tracks for audio or whatever, I'm talking about instrument tracks containing vsti's for music creation....

The though did cross my mind to try "reinstalling" the plugins, however that would be an arduous and seemingly extraneous workaround, especially when you're talking about reinstalling close to 200 vsti's....(!!!)

I notice someone else on the board experiencing something similar on a MacBook Pro....?

I'm gonna try re-assigning an empty plugin folder and then adding things one by one to see if it makes a difference....My next stop is actually calling tech support...Never had to do it....Is the telephone tech support generally very responsive and helpful?

Ok, just did all of that...Doesn't make a difference..ANY vsti plugin I put in the folder, you get latency and pops and clicks.....

The Pops and Click are not random, they are in a steady rhythm, like a "strobe" kinda effect, but for audio (like 16th note beats at around 150bpm)

Also I toggled delay compensation, doesn't make a difference either...Tried using the computer keyboard to trigger instead of the installed midi keyboard, same problem from the computer qwerty key triggers...

This is only happenning on vsti instruments..Audio plays back fine, Ableton Instruments including drum racks with my own created drum kits play back fine as well and trigger without harsh latency...Only playting a vsti instrument gives the problem...Rhythmic pops and clicks, with extreme latency when you trigger...Changing tempo does NOT affect the rhythm of the pops and clicks either...

Hmm....Changing the in/out sample rate to 88.2 or 96 khz actually DOUBLES the speed of the pops and clicks, which remain consistent at 44.1 or 48khz....Just figured that one out.....

Any more ideas? Sounds like a clocking issue maybe afoot...If i can dig up an older motu sync box i"m gonna try an external clock on the Presonus, although it never seemed to need it before...

At this point i"m trying everything..

Wow...ok...I wish I could say "Glad to hear" which means that I'm not alone....But we all should be real sorry to hear, actually....

I've sent like 3 emails to Ableton support....Either they don't have an answer for me, or they are so bombarded by other user problems that they haven't been able to get back to me....

Either way...Not good.....

Sorry to hear these issues are here. I was going to upgrade but it sounds like it'll be worth waiting especially because I use the software live (plus no educational discount on the upgrades).

I hope they sort this out for everyone asap. I'm going to wait for a stable version and hopefully edu discount again.

hi disciple27,

sorry about your trouble with 3rd party vsts. in order to help us to identify the problem that occurs on your system as quick as possible, please remember to include your log.txt from Live´s preferences folder:
- select "get support" in the help menu
- click the link "show the preferences folder"
- attach the file log.txt as a .zip attachement

Hey Guys and Gals,
No problem with Latency here, but loads of pops at the end of clips in Live 8!
Same set opens in Live 7 with no problems.

Even adjusting the manual fades I still get them, which makes no sense.
4ms end of clip fade preference is turned on in the preferences.

Doing my head in!!!

Guys...I gave up...Sorry...

I restored my machine back to a restore point BEFORE the Live 8 install.......I didn't even bother looking for any log file to email or anything..

I'm not a beta tester...I make a living creating and recording music, I don't have time to problem solve software, my apologies..

I'm back to a STABLE version, which is Live 7.0.10.......

I'll keep checking the forum for any updates and see the responses from others if they're having better luck with future versions.....

Very disappointed....

Hi. For me the latency was a conflict between ableton audio engine and my soundcard's drivers. Got it solved by setting sample rate to 96khz and back to 44.1khz again. This apparently re-initialized the driver, and told my soundcard which rate to use. and now the Latency's gone...

Re: Live 8 - Extreme latency in AL 8.2.2 using outboard gear?...

Post by ology » Fri Jun 10, 2011 4:34 pm

I am having similar problems using Ableton 8.2.2 on my Intel Mac Pro system os 10.6+. I use Pro Tools HD to mix but love to program midi in AL.., so when I launch AL... it automatically launches the DIGICORE drivers. THEN, If I want to insert an outboard piece of MIDI gear ( like my Triton etc...) there is a HUGE amount of delay on the monitor track in AL.... I tried switching my sample rate from 96 back to 48K and it seemed to help a little but I am still getting about 20ms of delay when playing... does anybody have similar problems and what can I do to fix this?.. I didn't notice it in previous version of AL?..

Also I contacted support and they are telling me to do some sort of "option.text" file creation and writing some kind of code into a folder?.. this is sounding very troublesome?... any ideas anyone????
