I love using Live. I've been using it since version 3 but I am still on version 6. I never updated to 7 because there was nothing significant enough for me to do so. Plus the fact that the bugs are never quite ironed out until just before they release a new version.
Live 8 sounds exciting. I want it. The prospect of better time stretching and a better version of Operator sounds good. The prospect of incorporating Max4Live within the Ableton program also sounds great, especially if people share stuff and it grows just like the amazing Reaktor library has. On the other hand, why not just buy Max5 seperately and not be restricted by an Ableton only environment?
As far as pricing goes, the competition have the edge. Sonar wins hands down with regard to bang for buck and sheer quality of the included free instruments. I also believe that Ableton should not be charging extra for their instruments, but they should be included with the package. Some people argue that Ableton is a small company. But are they so small nowadays seeing that it seems a large percentage of pro's and amateurs use Live.
I love both programs, but I feel like many others that Ableton should give better deals. If only they would make it more appealing to jump in and buy NOW, plus I am a bit annoyed that I didn't get a discount coupon. Ok it was only a measly 30 bucks, but I have been buying Live since version 3 plus bought Sampler and Operator. OK, I didn't upgrade to 7.
I'll probably hold of updating to version 8 until just before they introduce version 9. That way I'll have the most stable version of 8 and hopefully there will also be a great deal to go with it. In the meantime, my money is going to the Sonar eight update.

In some ways I agree. Considering how "functional" I have been creatively with live since ver 6, I can easily wait a while. I actually enjoy trying to wait as much as possible before I upgrade, and tone down my psychology of consumption. Maybe if I was a dj, I'd want to jump in asap with ver 8......

I agree with all your points...
I was disappointed with L7 upgrade myself..
for me..the thing is... I'm so used to working in Live.. so that... other than studios I work in...I don't even want to open another program when I'm in my own...
and almost always... I don't need to..Live is enough..
plus this upgrade is very impressive imo... and with m4l coming...
if you put the total of new features from L6 to L8... I bet the pricing is gonna make more sense...

I agree with everything you've said - except that Logic has the best bundle of synths and FX, and Cubase 5 has now added in a lot of the features that made Sonar a stand out PC DAW and the best value by far, and cut it's price to be about the same as Sonar, while having a better GUI and workflow (IMHO) (albeit the dongle is not for everyone).
We all know Live is a special beast. I love Live. I loved Live 7 because sidechaining and slicer and drum racks were huge for me. I love the new features in Live 8, I enjoyed beta testing it. I just feel, like many others that it's about 30-40% more expensive that it ought to be, and scrapping educational discounts was a bad idea - this was something that initially attracted me to Ableton, as Steinberg never did offer edu upgrades but Live had this, meaning I could upgrade for a sensible price, especially given the fact that Live is upgraded almost every year, as opposed to every 2 and a half years or so of Logic and Cubase.
