Huge differences in Library size between Live 7 and 8
Huge differences in Library size between Live 7 and 8
Hi there,
Have been installing Live 8 suite (upgrade from Live 7 suite) and am a bit confused over the size of the library created with the various options. Something seems fishy to me.
My Live 7 library had 12,806 files in it (nothing really added from me, just progressive upgrades from Live 5,6,7)
I made a backup copy of this and then upgraded it to Live 8.
During the Library upgrade there is a question about updating packs and deleting files.
If I choose 'Yes' to Delete, I end up with 8,431 files.
If I choose 'No ' to Delete, I end up with 11,280 files.
If I tell Live 8 to create a fresh library from scracth I only end up with 5,410 files.
These are large differences! Im intrigued why the upgrade option where I said dont delete anything from Live7 library still resulted in the new library having about 1,600 less files than the Live 7 library.
I can start to investigate each folder to determine what happened, but that's kind of painful. Was hoping that someone might have an answer as to what is going on here.
Thanks,
Paul.

A wild guess but are .asd files counted in the tally of the first library?
And did you check you have a .asd file for every sample that got reinstalled?
Edit.. Probably not the problem. I got .asd files for all the installed samples.

This needs to be addressed because I have Live 8 Suite (just got it) and I had a bigger Clip Library with Live Lite.
WTF?

Thanks Hoffman - good tip, I hadnt thought of that and it was indeed part of the problem. Ive now done a bit more analysis and can report the following details:hoffman2k wrote:A wild guess but are .asd files counted in the tally of the first library?

First up just to compare apples with apples I deleted all the ASD files in:
a) my current Live 7 Library
b) my converted Live 8 Library (when saying Yes to Delete Files and cleanup)
c) my converted Live 8 Library (when saying No to Delete Files and cleanup)
d) a freshly created Live 8 Library.
the rationale was that these ASD files are re-created by Live anyway, so they shouldnt cloud the 'useful' size of the library.
Next in my file counts I removed out the following folders cos they are either unique to Live8, or have just dull stuff that again shouldnt cloud any issues:
Grooves/ProjInfo/Defaults/Demo/Lessons/Templates.
After that I was left with the following key folders in the Library which I could then compare:
Clips/Presets/Samples
And here are the (still quite weird!) results:
Code: Select all
Library: Clips Presets Samples Total
Current Live 7: 984 2014 3639 6637
Conv to L8 (Del=No): 423 3998 3922 8343
Conv to L8 (Del=Yes): 423 3998 1136 5557
Fresh Live 8 Lib: 35 3627 695 4357What did I learn?
* Upgrading from Live 7 -> 8 decimated the number of clips by about 50% (984->423). (Regardless of whether Y/N to delete/cleanup). Another poster also reported this.
* The number of presets actually went up (2014->3998).
* The number of samples is dramatically affected by whether you say Y/N to delete and cleanup in the upgrade. (No: 3639->3922) (Yes: 3639->1136)
* The Live 8 fresh install has only a fraction of the clips and samples compared to my Live 7 library. (but presets is much higher).
The Clips issue is easy to see why:
In my Live7 Library I have sub-folders off the Clips folder like:
(Bass/Bleep/Keys/Lead/Mallets/Pad/Percussive/Rhythmic/SoundFX/String/Synth/Voice)
In the upgraded Live 8 library - all of these folders are missing (that explains the 984->423 clip reduction).
The Samples difference is also easy to track down.
My Live 7 Library has the following folders off Samples\Waveforms\Components
(Atmospheric/Attack/Harmonic/Spectral) (about 2900 files)
THe upgraded Live 8 library where you say Yes to Del/cleanup has only:
(Attack/Spectral) (about 72 files)
So that results in about 2800+ samples not being converted over...Hmmmm.
Its almost like the conversion failed or errored part way through, or perhaps some things are represented as Live8 packs that I have not yet installed into the upgraded library. In any case there is a whole lot of stuff missing...
Or am I just missing something obvious...?

Re: Huge differences in Library size between Live 7 and 8
yep... I've noticed that alot of the presets are missing...
for instance...
there used to be folders for 'tension' presets which are now missing...
like the folder 'ethnic' which contained some nice presets..
oh... and btw... HATING the 'construction kits'...

Re: Huge differences in Library size between Live 7 and 8
I want to follow this thread. I am completely confused by the library updating situation. I installed 8 clean, not updating my 7 library. in addition to noticing that all manner of presets and samples are missing, I also had live 7 suite installed with EIC, as well as the woodwinds set from the orchestral instruments. I was hoping to avoid having to reinstall all of this stuff, for the sake of my hard drive... but now i'm thinking that i just need to bite the bullet and reinstall EIC and orchestral, as well as any third party live packs.... argh...

can't you just see in preferences which live packs are installed? (I'm not in front of it right now.)

I am too. All I did was download Live 7 Suite to Live 8 Suite upgrade and install it. I'm not sure if I'm missing anything or not. I haven't noticed anything missing, and my totals as far as samples and clips are a lot higher than what you guys have posted here.
I just received my Live 8 Suite box today, and the only thing that I installed from it was the Cycling 74 and the Zero G loops.
Am I missing something or not?

BUMP.
Where are my clips?
What else could I possibly be missing?
I went from the Live 7 demo for 14 days and then later bought 8 right as it came out.
My library is very small too.
What gives?

Re: Huge differences in Library size between Live 7 and 8
Have any of you tried installing the "Live 7 Legacy Pack" (available in the downloads section of the ableton website)?
Noticed that there are very few impulse presets in the standard Live 8 library. Probably trying to move the people on to Drum Racks. But this alone would probably reduce the number of clips & samples by quite a bit.

Re: Huge differences in Library size between Live 7 and 8
I had the same problem and found this post. Installing the "Live 7 Legacy" fixed the problem! Ableton, being so good at giving useful information to us customers, seems to have dropped the ball on this one. It's an obvious oversight. Doh!
Upgrading to Live 8 from Live 7 (and every update for that matter) should simply import all of this stuff automatically, and/or let us know that installing this pack is required if we want to keep our Live 7 tools. I think emailing support to let them know would be in order. After all, they depend on us to let them know the obvious sometimes. I am emailing them now...

Legacy means = Old + Optional
Like the legacy Grain Delay for example.
You can't blame them for wanting people to start with a cleaner and better organized library.
Show me one person that actually uses all 12000 files..
