guru grooves in ableton

Post by rednas » Mon Apr 20, 2009 5:51 pm

hey ableton guys,

first of all, I'm sander alias rednas from the Netherlands and an Ableton user since 1 year.

I saw a music tutorial from the Future Music Mag with Funkagenda. He was using a guru groove in Logic, a preset called 'NTV Swing'. Now I know Ableton 8 has a lot of grooves included, but I can't find the NTV Swing one. Would that be some kind of MPC preset or what? I like that guru groove a lot so i want to lock every other synth in ableton into the same groove.

I would simply record the loop from GURU into live, with the groove applied. Once recorded into Live 8, you can extract the groove from the recorded loop (I believe you right-click in the recorded loop to get to the "extract groove" option - going off the top of my head as I'm at work!) and add to your collection so it can be applied to whatever, whenever you want.

Hope this helps!

you could simply drop a pattern from guru as a midifile in ableton (way better and more accurate than record to audio and extracting the groove from audio).

cheers and happy grooving!

good morning sander! it depends on your song style. i would recommend you extract both the 8th and 16th patterns (like the preset ones in the groove pool; the grooves there are also divided in 8th and 16th swing grooves with different timing settings). be aware that guru has a groove velocity and a groove timing knob. keep in mind that this will not result in only one groove pattern if you change parameters on both knobs. If I were you I would create many snapshots with different velocity and timing settings of that NTV groove (e.g. 10%, 20%, 30%, etc. groove timing). then decide which one works best for your projects.

i´m assuming you make electronic dance music, then take the 16th ones. but as I already mentioned above, it totally depends on the style of your song and the track/clip where you want to apply the groove. play with the settings, there is no rule of thumb. true to the motto: what sounds good, is good ....

unfortunately i don´t have guru anymore. could you please provide me with some midi files of the extracted NTV grooves? I´d like to test something out. send me a pm and i´ll provide you with my email.

cheers!

Thanks dude!

Sure, I will make some tonight and PM them to you if you like...I normally use the 50% NTV Swing. It works great in club/house tracks. But I will make some 20,30, and 40s too

And how would that be more accurate? Not pushing back, just want to understand myself. Either way you could extract the groove, not sure how that makes a difference?! And I personally wouldn't say way better, personal preference really - I like to use the recorded audio as more track fodder and add this into the mix with processing. Again, personal preference and work flow..

if you extract a groove from an audio file, the timing information live gets is based on transients. the transients live guesses/assumes are not always perfect. the timing information live gets from a midi file therefore is tighter. in such a case the timing is not estimated, the information is a one-on-one copy based on that specific midi file.

you could of course extract from audio but in conjunction with guru it´s faster to drag the pattern as a midi file directly into live and extract the groove from there. you´ll also save the time setting up a track to receive and record audio.
