Live performance, Mastering and Sonic Maximiser...

Post by mlangsman » Mon Apr 27, 2009 9:30 am

Im playing out an actual live set of my own stuff for the first time and was wondering how to make things feel more mastered if Im throwing together my own loops. Any tips on this would be great...

I picked up an old 882 external maximiser a while ago which Ive started fiddling with recently. It seems to work wonders on certain parts and loops but I was wondering if any of you have used the plugin version and what are your thoughts as this would be much more convenient ? I was thinking about the possibility of using an instance on my master bus to help glue things toghether - would this be a good idea ?

cheers,
Marc

fwiw, I use nothing on my master bus when playing live.

If you find it does work well on some loops you want to get some sheen on, simply resample them through the maximiser and run them live as new audio loops which now include the printed maximiser tonality.

That way you avoid the additional CPU load of having to have the actual plug in on the set when you're playing live but you get the benefit of its service. Just means you can't change anything live but with a maximiser why woudl you want to?

I find some of those type of plugs also add latency which for me playing guitar through Live live is a no-no.

So, I do run some Live effects rack on effects channels but otherwise keep the native plugs to a minimum live and never put 3rd party stuff on the live set but use them in my production and then resample everything to audio loops for live use.

Other may differ and just my 2c of course.

Oh right - yo you find that sounds okay ? Do you pre-master your material before you play in any way ? I wasnt sure how this would work if I didnt know exactly how my loops would be played together live.

Ive been doing a little of this but its pretty time consuming - maybe Ill just have to live with that though !

I hadnt thought about the latency either actually but what you say makes a lot of sense - probs best to keep things quick and stable as possible :)

Yes, I deliberately separate my production sets from my live sets.

I mix and master my tracks in the production phase and then lift the material out as rendered audio clips for my live set, meaning they sound exactly as the produced track in the live set.

It takes a bit of time to prepare your tracks for playing live. i guess it differs for everyone but I see performing live as a completely different animal.

Sometimes it seems to me that people are trying to recreate the process of producing a track live, which is far too intensive for me. I like to have a fun playing the music I've already created.

Kind of do the hard work fist to make it more fun later.
