This is my first post and I'm kind of new to Live, so I'm sorry if some of this doesn't make sense...
Allow a sizable horizontal division of the session view cell grid. In one half would be the clip grid. In the second half would be a list of the devices, one per slot, descending as they are arranged in the tracks device chain; maybe it would be called a "device cell". This would allow you to see all the devices as they are listed for every track. This would allow a user to easily move a device (cell) or group of devices (a group of cells) from one track to another, and place it anywhere in the device chain just as easily as you could move a clip(s).
Further, highlighting any cell should show that device centered in the device chain window for easy tweaking. In addition, highlighting a "device cell", should assign that cell's parameters to a connected midi controller. With a toggle (midi mappable), multiple identical "cell devices" could be selected across tracks and the midi controller could change all the highlighted cells of like kind. So lets say you have two beat tracks each with an identical pingpong delay "device cell", you could highlight those two cells and then tweak it, while leaving a pad track and vocal track (remember those?) unaltered. Besides much greater flexibility, this would save the trouble of routing them to a return track housing the delay.
This would be especially useful with the new akai apc40 controller. An example: let's say you map three rows of the "device cell" window to the bottom three rows of the trigger buttons. By hitting one of the cells, you would automatically be assigning the nobs to that device without having to select it in the device chain with your mouse. Less mouse means more fun.
Finally this idea also allows you to easily view all the devices in a chain when you are mastering a final mix. Just "seeing" the entire representation of devices and tracks is quite satisfying once all the arrangement is done. It also can help to "see" and fix any issue that you might "hear".
