[OT] Netbooks - any experience?
[OT] Netbooks - any experience?
i got to buy me lady a 'netbook' (because she needs one for a job she just got, and the upgrade rotation of my macbook which she fancies is due to later at autumn ...)
anyway, our budget is up to 300 € , so i guess it's just entry level. i'm looking at "eee pc"s and Acer Aspire (A110X, specifically)
the small hard drive is not much an issue, as i have couple of 2.5'' USB HD's laying around. i just wonder what should i beware of, anyone has experience working with such thing? ?
from today's visit at some media shops - the Acer looks better from a first glance . keyboard feels nice while the eee's build quality not very convincing.
she will use it mainly for browsing the web, emailing, word processing etc.
thanks for the input!

I love my Dell Mini 9. I use it more than my MacBook Pro. I even turned it into a Mac.

How much compromises do you need to make when doing such a thing?sparklepuff wrote:I love my Dell Mini 9. I use it more than my MacBook Pro. I even turned it into a Mac.
Last time I checked, you needed a customized version of OSX which can't be updated and not all hardware was recognized.
How is your osx experience on a netbook?

Zero compromises. The OSX installed is the OSX directly from my OSX disc. It is the exact same thing as using any of my other Macs. I fucking love it. Even put Live on there! Not very powerful, but I can make music with it!

Only one more month till WWDC. Not much longer to suffer through my yearly "will apple release a tablet" phase anymore

Hi, I'm intersted in running Live on a Inspiron Mini like this (OS X or XP), for live usage purposes (i.e. mainly using Looper). Can you give me any idea on the performance limitations? i.e. how many fx like reverbs/delays and say vocoder will it handle?sparklepuff wrote:Zero compromises. Re: [OT] Netbooks - any experience?
Hi,
i installed Live 8 on a lenovo S10 with mac OS.
Performance is rather poor. One Reverb on "High" with one audio loop
running boosted the processor to 47%.
I didn't try DJing but i guess i wouldn't recommend it.
You can use it to program beats when riding a train but
i don't think i would ever use it on stage.
Also the screen is very small for the use with live.
If you don't use the full screen view (F11) you have to scroll
around a lot.
Maybe an older version of Live needs to be installed.

Better jump on that Mini 9 while you can - Dell is discontinuing it from what I read. Gizmodo was sad cause that seems to be the netbook that users are having the best luck with installing OS X on (as evidenced by sparklepuff in above posts)

Re: [OT] Netbooks - any experience?
i don't know really, but Lenovos are the only PCs that feel well built and sympathic to me...
people i know who had acers (normal laptops not netbooks) all had trouble with the built quality, cracked screens, broken keyboards... etc.
but i guess in a 300 euro netbook you can't expect that much anyway...?
