SELECTION TOOL!. pleeeease.

Post by Goran@Irrupt » Sun May 10, 2009 11:01 pm

that's the thing i wanted to see in Live 8. and 7. and 6. and 5...
i need it so much in my work. i hate the way how you select the part of time in Live's arrangement view instead of selecting specific files. i'm working on a theater peace at the moment. ten or so channels, bunch of cut up vocals and music all over the arrangement. when the director tells me that i need to move a bit some parts i'm getting really stressed because i can not select only THOSE parts, and holding the mouse while making a selection AND zooming (with +) at the same time is not really working well. and please don't tell me that i can do it with holding Ctrl button, 'couse that's the not the same thing.
i can't think of any reasonable explanation why the hell Live is still missing this feature.

anyone with me on this?

'Paint' the are in one channel you want to select.

Press ctrl/apple+L, the area is looped.

Click the loop bracket and everything is selected.

Cheers,

thanks P, but i don't need "everything" selected. i want f.e. files 1, 3 and 4 in the first channel and 3, 4, 5 in the third chanel. i don't want to affect channel two or file 2 in the first channel. hope i was clear enough...

i dont get it, surely you just click the top part of the audio file to select individual files and then use the bottom half of the audio file to select time. works for me.

I'm with you on this one... and I don't think there's an easy way to do what you want to do at the moment.

Even something as simple as just being able group clips together would be a major step forward, as moving stuff around thats not in big chunks and or neat little looped blocks is such a pain.

How hard can it be to implement a "group clips" or a proper "selection tool".

This is the kind of thing that drives me crazy... and makes me wanna go and throw a brick through the abes window... no actually I'll throw two bricks taped together with gaffer tape and write "group bricks" on the gaffer tape... although that's assuming the German architects implemented windows in the abes building.

You could just put a loop brace around the section you want to select, then click on the top of the brace to select all clips in the brace and then simply click on clips while holding CTRL on the PC and I think CMD (or Option -- I am not in front of my computer at the moment) on the Mac to deselect the clips you don't want. Really quick and simple unless you mean you want to select track one measure 1-5 and track 2 measure 9-13 at the same time or something like that which obviously doesn't work with the method desrcibed above.

Hope this helps though!

i think the o.p. wants to select non-contiguous clips...if so, we don't really need a selection tool, just the ability to shift click multiple files.

yowzer i see what you mean no, i had always assumed shift clicking individual clips would have selected only those clips. This seems like an epic overlook. Seems it would only take a matter of hrs to program something like that too surely?

Are you sure Ctrl/Cmd clicking them doesn't work? Shift + click is often reserved for contiguous selections.

it looks like people who make Ableton were/are not stressed about this for years, which can only mean that they never work with non quantized material. or they are masochists.
could this be applied to majority of this forum? well.. i guess so, otherwise we'd have dozens of complains by now.
