Quite Possibly a looping algorithm bug

Post by gaspode » Fri Aug 06, 2004 2:42 pm

Hey guys... yesterday while playing around I wrote a perl script to create .wav files with a sin wave of varying frequency...

Anywho here is the problem...

I loaded up a sin wave file (a400 I think)... I used the warp markers to make sure that the loop starts and ends crossing the zero point... all good so far...

However, when I play this file with beats 1/16, it was causing a pretty nasty pop... so I recorded the output just so I could look at it, and sure enough, live was causing a pretty big skip at the end of the loop because the waves weren't aligned properly.

I figured this might not be so bad, as beats wasn't the correct setting anyways... I tried repitch, which I was expecting would pitch the file correctly with the warp markers... etc... but it maintained the audible pop in the file... this I believe is wrong...

Switching to texture... I am confused as to why I am getting a strange pumping sound that changes the second half of the sound based on the tempo. So at 130 bpm the 1st half is looking like a standard sin wave, however the second half has these odd sin wave modulating a sin wave rhythmic effect... at 123 bpm I am getting a strange attack/decay type effect added to the sound... at 102 bpm I am getting pops, rhythmic effects and attack/decay fx...

I get similar issues using the tone setting...

Anywho... I can understand if the answer is 'this is how our algorithm works' as I know you can't solve every possible problem... however I had kind of hoped that some of this stuff would work properly for some things I am playing around with.

Also I would like to point out, that some of these bad 'effects' are lightened by moving the first warp marker to the second iteration of the loop. Perhaps the grain table is looking before the warp marker in this case and getting more or 'correct' data?

If it would be of any help to email this data with all the recorded loops I have made let me know I can certainly send over the .wav file I created, my set or anything else that would be of any help. heck I'd be willing to record an arrangement for you guys so you can see the settings I used and what I changed if it'd be of any help.

Thanks guys!
