djing with live question

Post by festal » Thu May 14, 2009 6:17 pm

hello guys..i ve understood how warping goes eq and staff..all good..but...have a certain question about the master channel and the 2 audio channels(decks)..when i mix 2 tracks the master gows red so i presume i should put a limiter..what adjustments should i make to the limiter to the threshold ratio attack etc..?or should i put just a limiter and im done?what limiter do u suggest..?i sofar have tried the l2.
also i have discovered that when i kill the bass(sometimes) and when i put effects like beat repeat in the audio channel it is clipping..should i put a limiter in the channels too?and furthermore when i send a track to a send channel with a filter delay for example it can also go clipping..so should i put a limiter to the send channel too?:)
i of course care about the sound quality so take that in mind for possible suggestions..
oh and another one...what do i do about the different volume tracks?should i put a utility plugin so when a track is lower in volume i can increse it?(but then it will be clipping..:)!!!)
anyway guys sorry if i tired u but i cant figure these things out by myself so any help is appreciated..
Lots o thanx

put a limiter on the Master output, set it so that the output is a few dB below clipping. the thought around here is to set it at -6dB.

the other tracks have a LOT of headroom, even when you drive them into the red. no need for limiters there.

there are some DJ and production audio effect racks that come with Live, try those out.

Having a limiter on the master can be nice to be sure that it will not clip, but IMO you should try to avoid it being in use and just reduce your levels instead.
Probably the tracks you play is mastered and hence already limited, and the PA will have a limiter in place as well.
Limiting tracks three times is not a recipe for good sound quality.

Also, I'm not sure why you would set neither threshold or output as low as -6 dB.
For the threshold, you really do not need to bring it down at all to avoid clipping.
You will not get internal clipping with the 64 bit float engine even if you really tried to....the clipping happens when going from float to fixed.
And bringing the output to -6 dB you might as well skip the limiter and instead turn down the master fader by that amount. Then you will be able to mix plenty of tracks at 0 dB without clipping.
