Allow me to introduce myself.
Sup everyone,
My name is Vic. I live in Philly, and I've been making beats (hip hop) on and off for close to 10 years. HOWEVER, I've always used the Akai MPC2000/xl. A friend of mine (Tony Stone... you should check him out...he's NICE with the beats on Ableton http://www.tstonemusic.com) recently put me on to Ableton. I just purchased Ableton Live 8 a few weeks ago, and I also copped an Akai MPD24 to use with it (sold my mpc a while back).
I must admit, I'm a bit frustrated with Ableton (but excited at the same time). My frustration isnt necessarily with ableton...just with beatmaking on a computer. Again...I've always used just the mpc2000, so thats ALL I've ever known. But I've been madd encouraged by what I've been reading about Ableton on various websites, reviews, and what some friends of mine have been able to do with it thus far.
So.... just wanted to introduce myself. I'm happy to be here, and hopefully I'll be able to learn some good stuff from you kats. PS. Forgive me in advance if I ask dumb questions regarding Ableton... I know exactly what I want to do in Ableton (slice up samples/breaks...assign them to pads, sequence, mix, boom..done) but at the present time, I'm soo new to it that I don't yet know how. I'll try and push myself to read the manual, but I will admit...I suck at getting anything out of reading manuals...
Anyways... Here I am! Look forward to building with you.

Re: Allow me to introduce myself.
I recently made the same transition as you, it will take you a while to get your head around Ableton (took me a few months to "get it") but once you do, your mind will be blown. My MPC is sitting on my entertainment center collecting dust...and has, since I figured out Live 7.Golden State wrote:Sup everyone,

Re: Allow me to introduce myself.
yeah, the slice to midi... still tweaking with that. havent figured out what I'm doing wrong..but again...I havent peeped the manual on that yet. I've been told to use drum rack instead of impulse... my man Tony Stone told me that impulse is more limited than drum rack (he said drum rack is a newer addition to ableton). I'm trying to figure out how to highlight like different part of my sample, and assign them to a pad so I can start FREAKING THE MESS out these samples/breaks/drums! LOL. I wanna get to beatmaking sooo bad on Ableton. It sucks to have dope beats in your head, but don't (yet) have the understanding of your new gear to "make it happen"! Anyone else know the feeling?bosonHavoc wrote:welcome to a true experiment in social anarchy.... the forums

BTW... yeah, we still got the pretzel jawns here... I'm not from Philly though... I'm from the West Coast (SoCal). I just happened to land a job here after I got out the Air Force. Soooo I'm here on the east coast hating the cold weather and missing San Diego!

Re: Allow me to introduce myself.
I listened to the beats on your friends' website. That's all in Ableton? These are some of the least Ableton-sounding beats I've heard (it seems to my ears that beats made in Live , Reason, MPC's, or Logic, usually tend to be recognizable as such). Inspiring if it's true.
Regarding your frustrations with making beats on a computer, can you be more specific?

Thats madd encouraging to hear! You making hip hop beats? or electronica. Believe it or not, I actually started out on the mpc doing Chicago Hard House... but then slowly transitioned to hip hop (always listened to hip hop though). Now I produce and DJ for a group in philly (couple dudes that go to my church).I recently made the same transition as you, it will take you a while to get your head around Ableton (took me a few months to "get it") but once you do, your mind will be blown. I'm not sure where he pulls all his sounds from, but he creates all his beats in ableton. and regarding my frustrations... all, nothing specific... just more or less frustrated at myself for not being able to soak up the info on the various (how to) videos and carry them out in ableton. Again...I"m a newby, so this shouldnt surprise anyone. I still need to read the manual.nowtime wrote:I listened to the beats on your friends' website. That's all in Ableton? Re: Allow me to introduce myself.
am I the only one that has a good feeling about this guy? it's so rare that someones genuine friendliness actually translates well online.
now do yourself a favor and don't hang out here too often, it'll suck your life away.
I've been to your city man, it's got some beautiful little spots here and there. I went out late night with some friends to get my first REAL philly cheese steak and it was really god damned f**king good. Then I got really drunk and threw up in my friends bath tub

It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.
