Post by drunkn_ninja » Thu May 28, 2009 12:42 pm

I am looking to update my VST collection and was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions? I am lookin mainly for some nice synth sounds, good sub bass and a couple of nice piano sounds but random works well

I'm really liking Alchemy from Chameleon.
Other than that, FM8 and Zebra 2.

zebra zebra zebra! Zebra is the single best synth I've ever used, and has become the only synth I use. You can make just about any sound you want in Zebra. It comes with a TON of presets, you can download them tons of places for free or for cost, and the creator, Urs Heckmann, has begun making a youtube series for getting started with creating your own presets, and learning what all the functions/controls do. Even if you don't want to make your own, you should watch the videos, as they'll teach you how to make the factory presets sound different and fit better in your mix.
Whether you want something that will work out of the box and sound great, or need super flexible and customizable synthesis, zebra will work for you.
You can check out/download a good variety of Zebra presets at http://www.u-he.com/zebra/index.php?item=patchsets
Zebra also comes with Zebralette, which is a single oscillator synth. It's a lot less complex, uses less system power(I think?) and also has a slew of presets. I say I think above, because on my 2.6ghz P4 laptop, it runs a lot better than Zebra.

Before I used Zebra, I was using Sytrus (because I was also using FL and had not 'discovered' ableton.) It's really simple and can make some badass sounds, though, it costs only $20 less than Zebra, so I can't see any reason you would want to buy it instead.

I personally don't use many other VSTs in ableton, but if presented with one that's better than what ableton offers, I'd probably switch. What kinds of VSTs do you guys use for effects, eq, loop manipulation, etc..?
