Challenge your creativity! Song "contest"

Post by painseeker » Sat Aug 14, 2004 8:07 am

Hi,

Here's an idea: We'll(or I'll) make a small samplepack, containing say, 10 - 15 different samples. The challenge is to make something out of the samples. A Live track prefereble

The whole idea behind "Challenge your creativity!", is to be a bit more "social" and get to know how other people use Live. In other words. Learn new stuff :D

I made up some "rules" (which I'm very open for suggestions/iprovements), which are listed below:

1: All tracks has to made in Live, meaning rewire with other apps is not allowed. (maybe we should make two different groups, one Live 3(or older) and a one Live 4, so that we're sure that the als files are compatibale with your particular Live version?)

2: 3rd party plugins, such as VSTi and VST FX are NOT allowed. (no exceptions)

3: You can add all the samples you' like yourself, but no samples are to be more than 2 consecutive bars. Meaning, you're not allowed to use "vocals", long premade drumbeats, long premade basslines, long premade string chords etc.

4: Your track has to contain all samples in the sample pack, in one form or another. Be creative! :D

5: All tracks will be "public", meaning that every track will be available for download, so that everyone can see how the track was made, and to ensure noone is cheating, by using 3rd party plugins or long samples.

6: Deadline will be 2 weeks from the date the samplepack will be avialable.(please let me kow if you got other suggestions regarding deadline)

We'll have the weekend to talk about the details, but monday morning (GMT), I'll upload a samplepack, and then the "contest" starts. Maybe Ableton will be willing to sponsor some "prices", or a chance to get your track as an Ableton Live demo song in future releases?

Thank you for your time. Comments are welcome.

may i suggest limiting to just the provided samples? this would make it much more interesting (besides, people could just render fx and vsti stuff and add it that way...cheaters!). I'm pretty sure that between simpler, live's fx and the clip warping options, you can create almost any sound you want (ok...maybe an exageration, but still).

anyway...good idea and count me in!

yea i say limit it to provided sounds.

Lets see what everyone can do with the same basic tools.
Let them use whatever VST effects they want, i know i'll be running anything i can through Intakt. Maybe MS-20's LFO, etc.

Dear Painseeker,

Cool idea!

Maybe just a few categories. Just like the olympics with or without dope.
This means a category only with tools provided with Live and let say 20 samples and a category with everything God has forbidden (exept warez), cheating etc.
Style categories and maybey also a limit of 3 minutes!
And ofcourse registered versus guests!

Maybe join acidplanet contests to show what ableton realy can do versus Acid 4 or make it a group happening!

In my opinion it doesn't matter what categories you make, it all helps you to find the possiblities of Ableton Live!

I'am with you  !

Friendly regards,

Dennis

I actually suggested this a while back in the wishlist forum.

Anyone up for it?

I am.
Maybe just use the presets and ableton effects. Otherwise it would be no different from making a fresh track.
Saving the sets as self-contained could prove somebody cheated or not. I know it then comes down to webspace, but i mentioned in other threads i was willing to run a server for live 4 purpose's. All we need is a free app wich lets us do this and it probably will need to be cross-platform.
I could host 3 Gb a month

If we only use the samples that came with Live4, not the Pfx samples, then all thats needed is the .als file.

It might be worth doing a test to see how they open on other machines. Theoretially it shoud work fine, including any 'edits' that have been dragged and dropped into simplers an impulses.

My original point from the other thread was that some of these userbase created tunes might find their way into official Ableton demos. No word from Ableton on that one though.

It'd be a lot of fun nevertheless.

I think it is a huge of work to host a website with a lot of data. Made a small self-contained file to try-out scenes it out grows quick 1 Mb compressed! (http://home.tiscali.nl/mididreams/temptation.rar).

Sounds cool. I'm game.

I say everyone uses the same samples and only Ableton included effects. No Vsts. Level the playing field.

Unfortunately not all users have version 4.0.1, still a lot of users stick to 3.0.4.
Not all good songs needs midi. Only the happy few (Live 4.0.1) can use the .als files :?: Or it could be a push or pull strategy which I think is highly appreciated by Ableton  !

I think that we should only use the provided samples, that come with Live. Very good thinking :D Also Live fx only(adam jay, didnt quite get your point with the fx?).

But there's one small problem. Who's got which samples? You can get a 20mb and 100mb Live 4 download, which probably hasn't got the same samples included. Also there's different demo's for different versions of Live with samples. (I can see from my 20mb Live 4.01 download, that it only contains "single hit" drum/percussion samples)

I'd be happy to mail/send a link to a samplepack, containing the Live samples, but I need to know what samples to include.

Another thing. The Live demo seems to have some very long samples. Isn't that correct?

Regarding different genres. For starters, I think that we should just make what ever we want. If it becomes a success, we can make some genre categories later, but for now, do what ever you like. And for the acidplanet suggestion. I think we should first make some tunes, before doing anything on other forums.

If you like to participate, please send me a mail ( [email protected] ), and then I'll mail you the details. Please include your Live forum username, and any other details you think I might need.

The main thing to sort out now, is which samples to use. Anyone with some good ideas?

sounds like a great idea!

however, i think we should only use new samples, period. the ones painseeker was originally going to provide. it'll be more interesting that way, and simpler since everyone has to download the same stuff but there is no debating over what samples are worthy or not. besides it shouldn't really matter what the samples are, it's how you use them! ;)

the next time, assuming there is a next time, someone else can supply the sounds and so on and so forth.

either way, i accept your challenge :D 8)

As i said before, a server would be usefull.
We could make a package of samples, although i do not see that as being different from using abletons presets.
For those that not have the samples.... download them from this site? Anybody tested sending asl-files made with preset content? Good old e-mail would get this thing rolling....

I'm definitely down for this! My opinion is that we only use the provided samples, Live 3 or 4 and its fx.
peace,
