Help Recording automation using a midi controller PLEASE!!

Hi

I have set up an M audio axiom 25 midi controller which is recognised and is working perfectly, however i would like to be able to record device automation independently of recording a midi clip. What i mean is i dont want play a riff with one hand whilst twiddling knobs and trying control device automation with the other hand at the same time as i cant do this.

Does anyone no how to playback a recorded midi clip or audio clip and record say filter automation or pitch bend while the clip is playing back so that i dont have to play music with one hand and try and simultaneously do automation.

I would be incrediblydisappointed if this is not possible as ableton is such a brilliantly flexible and intuitive piece of software, i just cant believe it is not possible!!

It's as easy as possible: Activate record mode - play the clip - make your adjustment - done

You can do mod wheel and pitch bend that way, for parameter automation you have to switch to arrange view.
