how do i monitor channels before bringing them into the mix?

hi there.

i am using ableton live 4, and i use a motu 828 mk1...
i need some help here>>>

i want to be able to preview a track before bringing it into the mix, or even further, how to 'work behind the scenes', that is, make loops, record, and modify through headphones before bringing it in?

use the prelisten function, maybe?
options > cue switches
now ctrl-click the little headphone icons of the tracks you want to prelisten. set your cue out to 3/4 or whereever your headphones are.
now mute the tracks.
there you go.
