4.0.1 just won't launch (Windows)

Sony Vaio Laptop
Windows XP Home - 2.6 GHz, 768 MB
RME Hammerfall

I bought the upgrade from 3.0.2 and downloaded it, installed it, and the program just doesn't run (!) - the splashscreen freezes on "loading Template set", the task manager says 100% cpu, and I have to shut down manually. So I rebooted without the Hammerfall, tried launching Live again, and then the program crashes (but a little more gracefully, within the OS), saying "serious progrem error'.
I unistalled and tried reinstalling with no virus protection running, no luck. I still have 3.0.2 on my machine, could that be the problem? It wasn't on previous upgrades...

3.0.2 still runs great. Has anybody else had this?
