The unsigned Vs the signed.

Post by re.mark » Sat Jul 25, 2009 7:44 pm

So Ive been workin on a bootleg remix of one of my favoruite tracks. Got it to a really good level after about 2 months work, and decided once id finshed it to send it to the original artist on AIM for their dis/approval. After listening they said they really liked what Id done with it and wanted me work on a certain section in it and then they'd "put it out". Sweet, my first break, and its by an artist I really respect etc.
So a few days later I send them V2 and they like. They asked me to email them so they could send me the appropriate stems so I could get a cleaner version sorted, rather than me just working from the 320 (as it was a bootleg to begin with).
Chatting later they go "oh, your XXX" (off their forum), "yea" i said (cos I am), "oh cool.. I just thought u were a random american". Thinking to myself then, I thought that was a good thing as they knew who I was and had reference to me.
Now, about 5 days later, Ive still not received the stems and as I think more about I get the feeling that Im not going to get them and not going to hear anymore about it.
It seems to me, that as soon as they realised I was an unsigned artist they didnt want anything to do with me. Dont want to release the track (or atleast put it out - free whatever) as I guess it must be too much of a risk or somthing - I dont know. But its just downing that they really like the track but refuse to take the 'unsigned' risk, especially from someone I respect(ed) and had the impression they were down to earth etc.
Obviously I can do nothing about it, what they say goes. Its just crap that once upon a time they were in the same position as me and someone was willing to take the risk on them, but now they dont want to on me.
boo hoo. lol. wingewinge etc.

Well initially they told me not to distribute/play out etc. Ill give it a couple more days, then try digging for more info off them (they cant be that busy juding by their twitter status lol), if I get no luck with that, I'll stick a 320 up for anyone who wants it. :)

Surely a good track is a good track?

My experience with indie electronic labels is that they can take months to get anything done. Be patient...

Sounds like you may be reading a little much into this - if track works and is quality, they benefit from working with an unsigned artist, as it would be a far less expensive relationship than with a signed artist with representation, lawyers, etc.

Edit- Yep I kinda did miss read your post.

Well So how long ago was this? and from the sound of it, it did sound promising at the beginning.

I hope you guys figure something out soon. If its been just a few days maybe giving them some space, chill for a bit before you hound them again.

Your smoking hot off doing a remix ..maybe going straight into working on something new would be good.

Good luck to you,

Patrick

you are difneitly over readintg,. you may not hear from that peson again for a month,m it either means they smoke pot or they have a gig or are working on their own ORIGINAL tune, which requires actual creative mojo, and therefore they have locked themselves away/ the whoel business works super slow, be patient

they havnt got back to me but on the advise of the forum I am playing it cool and waiting for another few days before chasing it up.

you saud that they are aware of your because of the forum.... so potentially this artist has just read your post.

For me, its not this forum they know me from, but their own forum on their own server.
Someone that reads and never posts is a lurker.
I think - and hope - as suggested time could be the key, I think the main thing is not to be like a dick and pester them too much about it.
