Testing follow actions?

OK, so I have a clip with a follow action set to play the next clip and I was wondering if there was a [fast] way to "test" the follow action, besides launching the clip with the follow action and waiting for it to play to that certain point in the clip?

Anyone know what I mean?

:|

Like fast forwarding and seeing if I set the follow action timing correctly?

what's strange is that dragging up and down on the 'arrangement position' doesn't make follow actions move faster/slower/backwards/forwards.

bug?

so, if you launch a clip with a follow to 'next' in 8 bars and then FFWD the arrangement 7 bars... that the next clip will not start in 1 bar

just getting clear on what you are saying

I think that makes sense to me, because follow actions are a session thing, and not an arrangement thing.

so live does not care what sections of the arrangement play during those 8 bars while it waits for the session follow action...

I filled a track with a bunch of clips. set them to go to the Next clip after 1 measure. then I hit play and dragged the 'arrangement position' indicator up and down rapidly thinking the clips would go through the follow actions commands faster, nope, they just mosey along like normal.

so in a few seconds I can drag the 'arrangement position' from 1 to 300 measures very quickly, but the clips in follow action mode move to the set's tempo.

Do the same with follow action set to 8 bars, press play, forward to bar 7 by dragging up the bar counter, follow action will happen fine at the end of bar 8, as expectd.

Maybe your experiment was too fast for live to action the action, Tone.

arrgh I would not like that result. it should be one way or the other, not dependent on how fast you did things!

can you tell I'm too lazy atm to go down to the music computer and experiment??

actually as I think about it, there's a big difference between 8 bars and 1 bar.

tone, if you are moving through bars, nothing is changing as far as the follow actions are concerned... a 1 bar action will trigger at bar 2 or bar 299 or bar 300

but if you set at 8 bars, then it should trigger at 9.1.1 and 17.1.1, etc. etc.

??

dammit you guys are going to make me get up out of this chair. don't you know we are in a heat wave

;)

we're all fogged in down here, can't wait for that to break, no heat wave here.

pepe - dunno if changing from 1 to 8 measures changes the actions, but I noticed something. if I try to drag into negative measures, then I get the effect I was looking for, follow actions move really fast as I violently drag the mouse down. of course the 'arrangement position' stays at 1.1.1. strange this is that I'm moving the 'arrangement position' backwards from 1.1.1 but follow actions are moving forward.

this would be handy, I always get tired of watching and listening Follow Actions do its thing while I clean up my mistakes to get things coordinated.

get off yer arse LJ!!!

ok first experiment, there's some funky shit going on here...

had 2 clips, noticeably different, each on '1-bar: other' actions.

during playback, selecting the bar position field, and repeatedly hitting the up arrow button (i.e. incrementing bar position at random intervals) results in a perfectly in-time playback, with the reported current clip alternating at 1-bar intervals according to tempo (exacly as tone deft says)

except, the content of each clip seems to be altered in very unpredictable ways. IOW I'm getting a broad randomization of the drum patterns which are supposedly in each clip

all in perfect time, but not in accordance with either clips' content.

the pattern of what i'm hearing in a given measure is not what the supposedly playing clip contains. it may be that the playback is switching somehow between the two clips, but that the GUI is not reflecting it. actually that seems like a reasonable explanation:

clip 1 is playing, transport gets to 1.2.1,

hit the arrow, transport moves to 2.2.1, now clip 2 is playing at that moment, but clip 2 is still cued for playback in 2 beats,

hit the arrow at 2.4.1, now transport shifts to 3.4.1, clip 1 is playing, but clip 2 is still cued for playback at the next beat

4.1.1 hits, now clip 2 triggers off the follow action,

hit arrow at 4.3.1, transport shifts to 5.3.1, clip 1 is playing, clip 1 is still cued off the follow action,

etc

??????

...and so if you change the transport position a bunch of times during a single measure, you'll get some hybrid of the two clips' content, but the next cued clip will not change during that measure

that's my theory

I think I see what you're saying. also looking at the 'track status display' you can see each clip being bumped forward with the arrow keys like you mentioned.

it's not quite consistent though. dragging the mouse up and down on the 'arrangement position' should move the audio forward and back. it only moves back when the 'arrangement position' is at 1.1.1.

can you tell I still have 'arrangement position' in my clipboard paste? ;)
'arrangement position' 'arrangement position' 'arrangement position' 'arrangement position'
