When modding around in an instrument, you should be able to save that setting - without saving the whole instrument to hdd.

The following is the case:
while development of a song, you e.g. play around in some parameters. you turn a knob, but you turn so much, that you didn't find the original position.

so f.e. on a 303-emulation.
but its really important to come back to the original - or that what you have saved, if you do some sounddesign.
