Cheap Monome Alternative

Post by PLacidBasilisk » Tue Aug 11, 2009 1:55 am

Wondering what the best Monome knock-off is. Anyone had experience with something that perfrms similarly but sells for considerably less? I figure I'm paying a fair bit extra for the nice wooden box and the name, which I'm not too fussed about.

with a monome you're not only paying for the wooden box and the name, you're paying for local sourced and made product(local if you're american) for a very well supported device by a small company that is completely open source with a very active community of program developers. if you ever have a problem with the device you email the inventor of the monome/owner of the company directly and he personally responds to you.

now that might not interest you... it does me, but to each his own.

the apc-40 is likely the only alternative you're going to find. which is pretty awesome as well but certainly not the same thing.

they are actually both worth owning, I do own them both. I can say that the buttons on the monome feel way better, but the apc-40 is far easier to use as clip launcher since everything on it is designated and it works right out of the box.

Actually the environmentally-friendly, open source thing definitely appeals to me. I also love the fact that there is no branding, it's classic in a way that electronic instruments generally fail at.

I'm not sure whether the APC is exactly suited to my needs (though I'm not really sure exactly what my needs are) but I'm sure I can make it fit them.

I'd love to see the upper limits of what is possible with a Monome 256... That thing is a sight to behold.

it is pretty awesome looking isn't it?

I've got the 128, had a 40h for a little while. theres lots of video's on vimeo and youtube to watch the different monomes.

I honestly think the only options are monome/apc-4 or a lemur (too expensive)

however I just remembered there are ways to make the korg padkontrol do some of the same things. maybe look that up?

if you can get a 256 you can sell it for what you paid for it. there is that aesthetic that definitely appeals to some people, the weird artsy/science/tinkering crowd. it's just a cool box.

the APC is a great device, I don't play out, but I use it to launch clips, control track levels, shuttle controls and I mapped some of the encoders to global controls (bpm, quantize etc.) it quickly replaced my Novation SL25 (I have other piano keys.) people have already ported monome applications to the APC and since the APC will be MUCH more widely used I can see many many many APC doo-dads coming out with max4Live, but I don't see that happening for a year, year and a half.

my $0.02.

You could check out the arduinome, but don't discount the ethics of companies like monome.

interesting.. elementv do you not find them somewhat redundant? I'm genuinely curious of how you compare them

I use the apc40 in my studio only, and only for Live. I use the ohm64 out and with max/msp, logic, and serato. In the studio I actually use both together at the same time with different mappings.
