Having trouble with automation...

I am using a Behringer BCR2000 as my MIDI controller to control effects. Here is my problem: If I record my automations with the BCR2000, then try to draw in some additional automation, or draw in corrections the automation i made with the BCR, the effect or parameter deactivates and I can't reactivate it unless I close the file witout saving and re-open. Any thoughts on how I can fix this?

To make my problem a little bit more clear, I will give an example. Let's say that I am controlling a tracks volume with a knob. I record the automation using the knob on the BCR. Then I decide that I want to change something a little bit, so I go through and manually draw in the changes. The red line that shows the volume level will become a brownish gray color and can no longer be controlled by the BCR or by drawing. Also, the original automation shows up along the line, but when I play the track, the volume doesn't change as it should. Hope that clears up the explanation of my problem.
