Advice: Combining 2 laptops for DJing?

Post by bharrower » Thu Oct 01, 2009 10:24 am

Hi,

I'm looking to DJ with a fellow DJ using Live and wondered if I could get some advice?

We both have different versions of Live (6 & 7) and are looking to somehow incorporate both laptops when we perform. I have two midi-controllers (Vestax VCM-600 & Evolution UC-33e) but on one soundcard (M-Audio Firewire Audiophile).

I'm wondering if anyone could suggest the best way to perform using the equipment available? I'm concerned that we may need another soundcard to make use of both laptops but wondered if there is a way of using the one soundcard for both laptops?

Cheers

All you need is midi over lan and a crossover network cable

Oh, also, it will be pretty important that you both run asio drivers (ableton's audio preferences)... assuming that most laptops don't support asio you will both need to install Asio4All (http://www.asio4all.com/) And find an audio buffer size that will work for both of you and both have your laptops set to the same buffer size so there is no delay in your sync due to different buffer size.

By the way: Link to midi over lan: http://www.linuxsampler.org/ethernetmidi/ Yes I think they have a free windows version.

I've spotted this online tutorial:

It shows you how to create a wireless midi sync. Is this the best option? Do I still need aio4all for this?

Cheers
