Understanding session view a bit better???

Post by protosound » Fri Oct 02, 2009 9:49 pm

I use Live 8 in Arrangement view for performance every weekend - works great. I have about 50 songs, mostly MIDI with a few audio tracks in each, laid out alphabetically in arrangment view, with about 20 seconde between them, each with a locator to 'quick start' any song at any time. I still don't understand session view well enough to see my songs there, and I want to learn more about session view so I can use the Launchpad for live playing when it becomes available. Any tutorials available?

The manual has some info and there are tutorials built into Live. Also, there are more tutorials at http://www.ableton.com/tutorials

Outside of that go to YouTube and start digging...

I had a hard time myself understanding the session view at one point. for years until one day I finally saw the light. I just viewed it as an old school phrase sampler. where you push buttons to bring in different loops and sequences.

the session works with and also independently from the arrange view. any thing you play in the session view can be recorded into the arrangement view. some people like to do this for on-the-fly ideas, improvisational parts, bridges whatever etc. you can play both the session and arrangement view both at the same time but only one track from each view can play while both views play together. (anytime you play a clip from a session its equivalent arrangement track will be greyed out during this session mode)if you want to break out of the session playback to turn on that greyed out arangment track and strictly play all tracks from the arrangement just press the "back to arrangment" button in the control bar up top next to the overdub button(f10 shortcut)
it gets deeper than that(folder actions scences, clip launch behavior etc) but if you can wrap your head around those ideas I listed you be in the right direction to fully understand working in the session view alot better.

I use session clips to store alternate takes or different song parts. DJ's use them for different songs and loops etc. also knowing that a clip in the master track will play a whole row of clips(called a scene) helps you want to sequence in the session.

hope this was helpul. I promised myself to be more active on this forum so this was an opportunity for me

the Links H2only should help . have you ever gone thru the interactive lessons built in live. some of them will stream a video from the web.
