I might be being dumb, but when i arm a midi track and attempt to overdub new notes, it deletes the automation data that is already recorded on that synth.
I am in arrange page and have an envelope being automated. I want to play new notes in while keeping this envelope moving. The envelope data gets overdubbed too.
How can i add new notes while retaining the automation already there?
recording midi without deleting automation?

+1 I thought about this too.
Re: recording midi without deleting automation?
Unfortunately I think you might have to make a new midi channel that routes To the channel that is hosting the instrument.
The channel hosting the instrument would have all of your automation, and the new midi channel would be what you record your midi notes to.

Re: recording midi without deleting automation?
I do this all the time:
-duplicate track
-rename second track "<Trackname>automation"
-Delete all the MIDI notes from the "<Trackname>automation> clips.
-Record new midi on First track.
I find coloring both the original and it's copy accordingly helps with organization.

Re: recording midi without deleting automation?
thanks for your solution Origin!
its crap it seems if this is the only way though....Reminds me of why i never used cubase, and to perhaps stop messing with ableton and just do it all in logic, like i used to. huff puff!!
Ableton please sort it out and stop being annoying. You could clean up the market if you just steal all the convenient functions from everyones full time sequencers. Everyone is stealing yours!!!
Unfortunately most established producers i know wont give ableton a chance (full time sequencer), and in MY experience it is specifically due to the lack of features I have requested on this board. Its a Logic hangover. Personally now i think ableton are letting Apple walk all over them with flex time and a MUCH more reasonable pricing policy.
Its too much to delete notes and make new channels to just record passes of automation, and i am getting impatient with these little problems.
