Live 8. Why so gigantic?

So I've been a Live user since v4, and tonight I decided to upgrade from 8.4 to 8.5 and it's a nearly half a gigabyte download. WTF? It's not the suite. Just regular Ableton Live 8. How the hell did this application get so gigantic and is there no way a smaller updater can be created instead of having to do a complete reinstall each .x upgrade? It's getting frustrating and I have a fairly fast connection.

That's a good question. I'm a fan of small software. If it is not small than something is going wrong.
My other favourite software is reaper. It is a good competitor to sony's vegas if you do not need video. The installer is 3,4 MB and you get in this a full audio demo project too. As long live was 100-150 MB it was okay, but I do also not understand how is it grown to over 500 MBs.

10 minutes? I'm on a cable modem and I think it took close to an hour. It's ridiculous. I can understand if the base install is that big (I don't use any of Live's content) but there should be an "update" version or a version that doesn't contain the samples for people who don't use it.

I don't mind the size as I assume most of it has to do with audio samples. But I do find it annoying that with each subsequent version of Live, it takes longer for it to start.

If you weren't so busy being a jerk, you'd read that this has nothing to do with Live's footprint. Hell, I've got VSTs that come with 30+ gig installers. The difference is that when there's an update the entire library isn't reinstalled. That's just lazy.

Fair enough. We're all allowed our peeves that don't bother other people. But how often does Ableton release updates? Once a month, if that? This really eats away at you and your time?

i have a cable modem also, shared between 4 computers, i was downloading at 830 kbps, the ableton servers are pretty fast

the updates often update the library, so many times it needs the entire library to update, update, library, update

but your right, i dont use the pads, so there should be a version to download that doesnt include the pads

Sure. Last night I tried to squeeze in some music time and ran into a bug that may have been fixed with the newest version, but the night was blown because I spent most of it downloading and installing. Granted, in the grand scheme of things it's not huge, but I've just seems odd to even want to pay for the bandwidth for full downloads when I'm sure the library hasn't been touched much, or at all.

Again, I'm not complaining about how much space it occupies (though it's mostly a waste to me anyway) I'm complaining about the time suck when it's hard to squeeze in some studio time in a life filled with a lot of stuff. Wouldn't you appreciate it if there was a 5-10 meg download for basic bug fixes?

less than that, but as i only use ssds anymore, as hdd's are not acceptable due to their crap performance and reliability, $ per gb raised, and free gbs sunk. having a 160gb ssd allows me to think big in the ssd scene, but for ableton, it's still not "nothing to worry about". still, the main issue i have is, that it converts mp3 to wav. so my current smaller set of mp3s that i'd like to play would result in an around 70gb buffer. not acceptable.

but yeah, they need to get their installers working right anyways (they don't remove the older versions when updating anywhere, not in the "remove software", nor in the startmenu..), and they need to get their update routine working to do differencial updates.

and now you want to know the most sad part? this is all actually given. they surely develop with visual studio on the windows side. so why don't they just package a default msi, and generate differential updates out of it? it's not like the tech is not in visual studio, free to use... (and i don't know why any other company does not use msi yet to install, anyways.. ridiculous.. other os don't even allow other ways to install than their fixed one.. microsoft doesn't force you.. )
