Syncronizing Ableton Live on 2 macs (and more...)

Post by gakken » Tue Oct 13, 2009 5:31 pm

Hi.

Any suggestion on how to Ableton sync two macs? The "airport"-way seems a bit unstable. So I guess the good old MIDI-cable is the best alternative? And then choose one master/slave, and then we´re on...?
Ok.
But then how about three macs? And still avoiding latency?
Thanks for all help...

In my experience the airport way (using MIDI network of AMS) is not unstable when running.
It's just a bit inconvenient as you need to re-activate the session(s) after each system restart.
The good thing is that you can have as many sessions/connections as you want.
Since network is much faster than the MIDI protocol, latency should be no problem at all.

Try this video tutorial as the solution is pretty easy and straightforward. Works for me that one time I have tested it so far http://www.vimeo.com/3493325

what about LAN? From what I saw on a interview with Deadmau5 he used LAN because it should be more stable.
Haven't tried it though, but seems simple enough.
Dell XPS 8000
Macbook 2.4Ghz 4GB RAM
Ableton Live 8.2.7
Akai APC40
RME Fireface 400

LAN shouldn't be any more difficult or more stable then Wireless. Stability all depends on your computer and I haven't had any stability issues regarding any wireless connections in regards to my and others mac's. The only problems in Wireless is signal transfer, and as I suppose two or more persons in such a setup is not 50meters away from each other and inside lead infused coffins, then it should work fine.

Can't bear the thought of having to bring LAN cables with me in the gear bag :D

is it possible to use wireless syncing in a place without wireless network? Like in a celler or in a cottaga at the mountain...

Yes that's the whole point! you are not utilizing a specific network, but are connecting the two computers directly!
