Rendered levels

Would anyone care to share some tips on how to get my rendered levels up for play on let's say a regular cd deck. My mixed productions usually sound pretty good in Live 8 through my active monitors but it seems like when it's rendered out and played in say my car, the levels are low. Is this where mastering comes in? Any advice on what to do to "normalize" the mix? If adviseable, are there mastering plug ins that I could maybe run my rendered mix thru? Thanks for any input regarding this.
