I don't know how to describe this.
I just opened a set in Live 8.08 and the arrangement view was partially non-functioning.
The clip overview/zooming hot spot did not work, it was not possible to select it. So I could not move to an unseen area of the set.
It was not possible to grab the bar that separates the tracks from the audio effect window.
I waited for a while, in case Live was waiting for files to loadm but nothing got better. Then it crashed.

Re: Live 8.08, unselectable display & crash
I began seeing similar problems after I upgraded to Live 8 from 7. I did not open a support ticket because I also upgraded my MAC from Leopard to Snow Leopard at the same time and was not sure which was the cause.
Since you are still running Leopard, apparently the problem is due to something with Live 8 rather than Snow Leopard.
It may be more prone to crashes when you use mouse right-click context menus. I typically first realized I was in the midst of a crash when I did a right click on a clip and nothing happened.
I now make a conscious effort to avoid right-clicks and it does seem that I have much fewer crashes now.

I just upgraded to 8.09 last night. So far, I have had no crashes. I'llk go back to usign right-mouse-button-clicks and see if things go back into the toilet.
Steps without a right-mouse-button click:
1) Left-click current location of clip to be copied.
2) Use Live menubar to copy clip.
3) Left-click new location for clip to be copied to.
4) Use Live menubar to paste clip to new location.
Steps without a right-mouse-button click:
1) Right-click clip to be copied. Context menu pops up.
2) Left-click copy menuitem in context menu.
3) Right-click new location for clip to be copied to. Context menu pops up.
