No Sound in Ableton

Post by dustball64 » Wed Nov 04, 2009 5:34 am

God, I am about to throw this laptop out. It is a Vista 32bit laptop, and I am now running the latest version of Live 7. I downgraded because I thought it would fix the problem of having no sound in Ableton, even when I have tried every output for ASIO and every buffer size.

I updated my audio drivers, and it was great because Ableton worked for about 10 minutes. The audio driver screwed up all my settings making it so I couldn't listen to music, or listen to anything online. All I could do was Ableton. So, I exited Ableton and all my sounds worked. I restarted Ableton, and my sound turned off once again. No matter what I tried I couldn't get the sound to come back.

Also I have tried basic things and checked basic things (my GS waveable synth is off), and other things. If you have any suggestions though, please list them. If you fix my Ableton, I will love you forever, and ever and ever and ever.

Thank you :(

I will try and help..

If we do some A/B comparisons with my set up, I'm affraid I don't have the same set up, but if we do some preference exchanging, we might be able to seperate the issues out. You may have one or more isssue going on at once here.

On pc call up your windows audio device manager from your control panel. under the audio tab, it should show. sound playback and recording device types and midi playback.

It should look as it was when the pc was new with no software products like:

Sigma-tel audio for recording and playback
and wave GS wavetable synth etc for midi.

Launch Live and look in the preferences file under audio (as you know)
and under driver it should be ASIO and under Audio device it should be Asio4All

I'm baseing this on the pretence that you are using ASIO4all on your internal sound card.

Whats the story ballamory?

Yes, I am using ASIO4ALL and it is selected under the preferences tab. I don't think it had anything to do with the old playback devices because I had them disabled when I first ran live after I updated my audio card, and it ran fine. Then after I closed live, all of the sound came back to my programs, and the sound in live, once again, stopped working.

Thanks for the response.

Hello,

Do you have an audio interface connected to your computer and if so, what is connected
to the outputs of the interface?

Best,
Christian

Yeah, sorry that dosen't quite compute...

I'm trying to say, whatever sound card wether it be internal, (ok upgraded, internal) or external.

You have settings for when live is runing and settings for your operating system on your pc (windows xp/Vista or 7). You should be able to choose ASIO for Ableton Live and simple Direct X or Sigma Tel Auido etc for your operating system.

I can't even select ASIO4all under preferences on windows xp. so I don't know how that would work, unless your soundcard came with additional software to change settings, which, if it's pro audio stuff, should have explained it to you, in which case It should have a special addition of ASIO drivers to install.

I don't as of right now. I do have an axiom 61 though that I connect to record things. However, whenever I do have it plugged in, I still get no sound in Ableton. I can get sound from Reason though, so its not the controller. When I don't have anything in it, the sound doesn't work either.

My sound card is internal I believe. For the settings part, I do choose ASIO for Ableton, and I have an option for DirectX however those do not work at all. Uh, I can't select ASIO in my playback options for my computer (I think that's what you meant). I meant I could select it under my preferences in Ableton. I have vista32 b it, but I don't know if that will change anything. Thanks for the response.

Sorry for the bump but I really need this solved. I think I may have found the problem but I will need help from you guys since ASIO's FAQ doesn't cover it.

I use headphones so when I start up Ableton, ASIO starts up as well. I clicked on the options and things and on my "WDM Device List" I have HD Audio Device which is working, and some other ones. However, the one that caught my attention was the "HD Audio Headphone/Speakers. Right now it is on but it won't work (it has a big red X by it). It says it is because it is in use by another application or my Waveable synth is enabled. Well, I shut down every application except system apps and Ableton, and I still got no sound, so it wasn't that it was in use by another application. And I made sure Waveable synth is off, so what could it be and how could I fix it?

Thanks.

After looking over the issues you are having, it's not with the ASIO. However, because you are running Windows Vista, you may need to either re-install or, update your audio drivers. Eitherway, ASIO4ALL cannot use riht device because the driver is having problems (for whatever reason).

In my past experiences, I have never had problems in Windows XP. Running Vista or even Windows 7 causes the symptoms you are currently facing. I would suggest you to try removing your drivers and check the PC's support page for updated ones if possible. Otherwise, remove the soundcard from device manager and scan for hardware changes. If windows comes back asking for a disk, then you know something is wrong with the drivers.

I hope this helps you find a solution. Let us know how you make out, we are here to help.
