Routing Headphone-Djing with Live 8.0.9

Post by Perfectsounds » Fri Nov 06, 2009 2:31 am

Need some ideas...
We have the APC 40 and the latest version of Live. We use Live for original music production but do a lot of remixing as well. Most of the sets we have made are done in studio and mixed to a wav. For typical DJ work we us Virtual DJ and our mobile rig has a Denon Mixer and a Denon 4500 controller, eq, compressor,...pretty standard gear. We would like to use Live...well...live :-). The sound card is part of the Denon 4500 and has two channels. Ableton comes up on stereo channel 1 of the mixer. How do I monitor the individual channels in Live using headphones off the mixer? Obviously we want to preview beats or songs we are mixing before punching or fading them into the mix. Somehow I have to route those individual Live tracks to another channel on the mixer...keep that pot down and use the cue on that channel. At least that's what I think. Not sure...which is why intelligent forums were invented. So I look foward to your solutions. Thank you!!!

Mmmm yeah It starts with your sound card and the I/O button in the lower left side of Live.

Open the I/O and above the Master you'll see a Cue Out and Master out set the Cue out to be different than the Master out like 3/4 instead of 1/2. Next you see the solo button above the Cue Level knob next to the Master Volume. Press it to Cue instead of Solo. know the solo buttons are cue's

If you didn't know this info already it is in the Live Manual.

OK so now comes the part you'll have to figure out. Where the Denon Mixer sends that 3/4 signal? You could let me use it and I'll have a better answer for you or maybe mmmm read the manual. I use a different sound card and run the Cue to a different channel.

Sorry for my humor, I'm not trying to be a dick, it just comes naturally. LOL..... That'll be 5 dollars. Or fuck better yet just quantize ever thing and forget the headphones! Its Live Baby! Look mom no headphones! oh I should have gone to bed already.

Anyway, Hope that helps.

Good tip...makes sense. Yeah...I've put my nose into that manual for lot's of things. Sometimes I just don't have the time. There is always someone out there who has done what I want to do. Live has become a tool for us in our DJ outfit and in our commercial production facility. I'm cool with the "digs"...Hey we are all "creative types"...we were born to bust chops. Thank you for the push in the right direction.

Werd! So does your sound card on the Denon have a second stereo output. (a 3/4 if you will) and where does it send it?
