And the No1 Feature request is ? "You guessed it"
Come on fellas lets get the ball rolling.
This is the No 1 feature request for those who have it in their current DAW's "fact"
Ive asked so many people who use it and once you've used it in any project it's actually
impossible to live without it for workflow reasons no other request will improve music making
like this one. Its actually the only feature I think Ableton really needs all the others are
requests this is a necessity. COMPING. If you use this feature and miss it in Ableton PLS comment.
Who else uses this feature every day and how much less would you use your other music making
program without it. I would probably never use mine again.
Your Bro Seanieboi8
PS - and don't tune me there is a workaround the merry go round.
I just had to add this to the post 10-10-2009
Imagine having no warping and only stretching audio ability
and no automatic crossfades no groove engine etc
Add two or three other features that you thought you didn't need
and when you begin using Comping in your projects you'll see that it's
a more valuable feature than some of those combined.

seeing it isn't the same as doing it "Like making Love Lol"

Re: And the No1 Feature request is ? "You guessed it"
I've never missed it - Ableton has session view, it's pretty damn easy to try different takes there
Re: And the No1 Feature request is ? "You guessed it"
But comping isn't (only) about trying out different takes. It's also to provide easy recording of multiple takes (which Live record-while-looping partially provides) and to have control over these takes takes and finally to combining them into one very good take. To do this manually you need to duplicate tracks, set inputs, mute tracks, cut around each take, make one master track for the final performance etc. So it isn't pretty damn easy even arrangement-view, definitely not in session view. But maybe you don't do recordings where you need this? Then you probably haven't missed it.alex.the.forge wrote:I've never missed it - Ableton has session view, it's pretty damn easy to try different takes there

+1 Possu *** you explained it perfectly
Imagine doing 30 vocal takes or 100 for each verse trying to decide which is the best take and phrase line etc lining them all up for comparison and while your recording what you think may be the best take today may not seem that way tomorrow. Ok Ok you wont keep near a 100 takes!!! maybe 10 to 20 max for elimination. Lets you record and comp when the singer or musician has gone home, pro or friend.
Yo have you ever seen the movie labamba, where Richie Valens does the same take over like 100 time and his brother says "hey bro they all sounded the same to me man."
Everyone from U2 to Uncle Bob Sinclar has to go through this to your bedroom "Producer" with his buds
This used to be the no 1 hardest job in recording in the old days Ableton Get wid da Program. Pun intended. Cutting splicing gluing tape over and over Lead Vox Backing Vox Harmony >>>>>>>>>>
Try playing your guit into a project or your keybord skills aren't virtuoso so you wanna do take after take compare and comp with effects etc Ableton is useless I SAID USELESS for all this.
alex.the.forge If you never miss it you never used it as i said in my post

Re: And the No1 Feature request is ? "You guessed it"
well, it might be no1 request for those in need of that. for all others, it's useless stuff.
for me, nr. one would be getting automations finally better to work with. not being able to position f.e. an automation point to exactly 0 height is just annoying. and different curves and functions would be awesome, too.
but, to each its own.

davepermen - yeah i respect your comment man
Oh and its also useless for anyone who plays keys perfectly every time.
But for the rest of us mere humans its probably a needed feature.
I agree it a useless feature for anyone NOT recording Vocals, or any audio signal weather it be a guitar or bass or perc etc into live. But for anyone who plays perfect takes every time and has amazing one take singers this feature aint for you. Ive never come across singers or musos like this though.davepermen wrote:well, it might be no1 request for those in need of that. for all others, it's useless stuff.

Re: And the No1 Feature request is ? "You guessed it"
i'm 100% digital working so i see no use. but i do see use for stuff like vocals.
then again, live is, or was, more live oriented, and performance oriented. i guess that's why this feature is not in there. you wouldn't need it in a live environment, most likely, ever, now, would you? (or did i got that wrong?)
it's a nice DAW feature, though.. i wouldn't say no
even while i don't use it right now.

Re: And the No1 Feature request is ? "You guessed it"
Yeah I get what your saying
Remember when your comp recording each take is neatly under the last take pass in the same lane so it easy to see and choose.
Now that would be amazing in a live scenario
Imagine your a DJ with a guest sax player, guitarist or bongo player etc
Lets say your on stage with your mini keyboard playing a piano or synth line you feel inspired to play over a 4 bar or 8 bar loop. You play it a few times and the previous takes are muted but you can see by the midi data or you felt your second take was the best, you just pick that one and presto you use it. Best take live on the fly.davepermen wrote:then again, live is, or was, more live oriented, and performance oriented. i guess that's why this feature is not in there. you wouldn't need it in a live environment, most likely, ever, now, would you? 1) if i play live, i play live, even it it sounds like se kacca
2) if i would do that what you say, i would just record it all in one midi, and loop the part i like the most
i sure do understand your idea, though
just, as i said, not in any need

thing about working with clips in Live that I think a lot of people miss is the loop brace + arrow keys on the computer keyboard make it incredibly easy to navigate around
Someone on this forum I think did a big thread on "comping" like this once - that is, recording in the loop in arrange - the recording just keeps going in one long audio file even after looping back, slice to the length of the loop and and also set the loop brace inside the clip to the same length as the arrangement loop, then you can skip from take to take using the up/down arrow keys, that probably is not a lot different in terms of button presses and time spent on it really, it's just approaching it from a different angle
but I usually don't even bother with this, and I do record vocals and guitars.
but I guess we record in different ways, I don't tend to be a perfectionist with recordings so I don't feel the need for it, and I'm definitely not saying you shouldn't request what you think is important (this one's been requested a lot and maybe it's in the works)
But while Live's automation is in the state it's in, I definitely don't think it should be the number 1 request
The way I usually do vocals is I record the takes in session, then have 3 audio tracks going in arrange while I go through them - one has a parallel take (in time) that I can mute/unmute to hear each part to see which one's best, and another that is just like a holding track to put bits temporarily. Once I've chosen the bits I delete the 2 extra tracks. I guess proper comping might make this easier, but I've never had enough of a problem doing it in this way to look for alternatives - I find it really quick.
I have to agree with the point that it is a LIVE application. Even though I use it more in the studio, I use it because it's live focused.

Re: And the No1 Feature request is ? "You guessed it"
Yeah I use it the same way, when I have to put a vocal or instrument part down in Ableton. Its good at doing what it does the way it does it but it is very clunky and significantly slower compared to comping recorded tracks.
No its not a problem ! just inefficient compared to comping, the way its currently done isn't comping it a clunky workaround compared to comping
but the problem comes when you want to quickly chose lines or phrases in the recorded takes and turn them into a single track. Especially when you want to mute a part in a take or audition a part of a take and not the entire take. But like I said If you haven't used comping then you wouldn't miss it but you workflow certainly will. And you tracks will take longer to arrange.

Sorry maybe I should have said workflow request. I know the automation needs to be "fixed" or rather improved, but there is actually no comping at the moment just a kind of workaround system in place.davepermen wrote: But while Live's automation is in the state it's in, I definitely don't think it should be the number 1 request

How do you like my ventriloquism skills?
Re: And the No1 Feature request is ? "You guessed it"
Hi I'm a newbie but one of the first ableton tutorials I watched on youtube seems to fit in here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNx24_O0CTc
If I got it right, it seems like you want to have the workflow shown in the vid above made easier?
So in the end, it could work like this, right?
