multicore, multithread etc
multicore, multithread etc
hello experts,
as I'm interested by changing my laptop, I have some questions about Live application.
I heard Live 64bit version is planned in the future. ok. cool.
Now, Live 32bit running on 64bit OS is pretty cool for RAM>3Go. ok.
what about multithread support?
we all have the choice, for a fixed price, to choose an high frequency dualcore or a lower frequency quadcore.
what could be the best for Live?
any ideas? experiencies ?

Re: multicore, multithread etc
best would be some core i5 or core i7. why? because live can use multiple cores, but not arbitarily. depending on the routing and config of your tracks (and their count), it can't really multicore it. and the i5 and i7 (and maybe the i3, too? or the i5 doesn't? at least the i7 does) balance it's clockrate against it's core-usage. so it tries to stay in the same termal environment if you use one core, or all cores. what that means is, if you only use a single core, it clocks that core higher. once you use more than one core, it clocks down again to not overheat/use up too much battery.
so this cpu is about perfect for ableton live, as it balances itself to the workload of live as good as it can.

Thanks for your answer
Ok, I targeted i7 since a long time.
I guess it could be the right choice.
I always reinstalled each PC I bought.
The one targeted is provided with windows 7 64bit familial...my only doubt is about this version instead of pro.

no, all windows are the same, there are just different features enabled. you won't need anything more than home premium most likely.

It's the one in the middle. hard to read, sorry.

what feature that isn't on home premium do you need? most of them only work (and are designed for situations in) a domain setup, a.k.a. a corporate environment.

indeed,I only used windows XP pro.davepermen wrote:what feature that isn't on home premium do you need? most of them only work (and are designed for situations in) a domain setup, a.k.a. a corporate environment.
so my doubts are born from that.
indeed, network management is provided for home. AD/LDAP etc won't be use at home... so.. it may be very enough

Re: multicore, multithread etc
the only thing that could be interesting is the encrypting file system. but if one really wants that, there are other options. i personally don't care that someone could access my stuff if he steals my laptop.

iehks. you have nothing saved on the cloud. just shared it there for uncontrolled consumption. cloud is no save place.. (i hate cloud, i have all stuff on own physical hw backed up, that's stuff i have control over and can rely on).
i use the cloud (a.k.a., lets just call it old fashioned.. "the internet") for sharing and distributing stuff. like soundcloud, bandcamp, my own page, and such.

and still, they could just go bankrupt, or mess their whole data up (check microsofot danger sidekick) or could get hacked, and all the data killed by some crazy freaks.
or even worse, something real could happen (natural catastrophe, war/terrorism thing, what ever).
no sir, i have my stuff where i know it
not where i pay to believe i know it.

You definately don't need win 7 pro for home/music use.
Some one once said that if data doesn't exist in at least three physically seperate locations, then it doesn't exist.
