Confusion: MIDI, modulated params, volume via live.object

Post by peboer » Thu Nov 19, 2009 7:44 pm

I'm quite confused. I set out to do some comparisons between controlling volume with MIDI -> live.object vs. MIDI learned to a slider. In a project I'm working on, MIDI->live.object seems to pile on gobs of latency, but I wanted to strip it to the bare essentials and send you some useful info.
This project has a M4L device that uses cc 23 to control volume on Track 1 via live.object and cc 5 is "learned" to control volume on Track 1.
http://lividserver.com/dl/m4l/volume_confusion.zip

However, the confusion arrives: in order for me to be able to get MIDI into the M4L device to control volume with MIDI->live.object, I have to "arm" the track. This has the unfortunate effect of passing that cc data into the MIDI clip "Gimp A" that is playing, and recording the cc data into that clip, then passing it to the M4L device on the following loop cycles.
How can I get around this?? Or can't I? Do I have to have the M4L device on a track with no clips, and use live.object to remotely control other tracks (with something other than the convenient "path this_device")?

Peter.

So I did move the M4L device over to its own track so I could at least compare.
Indeed, volume control using MIDI->live.object (or live.remote~) is pretty poor vs. control with a "learned" device.
I also noticed that if there is a live.remote~ and live.object trying to control the same thing (you guessed it, I wanted to compare those two methods), I get an error:
live.object: Value cannot be set, the parameter is disabled

It would be great if we could expect similar performance in parameter control from a m4l device....

regarding that error: in looking at other forum posts I see that is a feature of live.remote~

hi Peter,

thanks for sharing this.

I almost forgot the old school midi learn, but maybe we will have to consider it sometimes.
btw, on the same subject, Julien made some tests to compare parameter control via live.object and live.remote~, live.object is not reliable when you make very fast moves on your control surface, live.remote~ looks solid regarding this.
