Fader & EQ in percent not in decibel for DJ'ing

Post by jazzelias » Wed Dec 09, 2009 4:08 pm

Hello everyone,

decible uses a logarithmic scale, for the human ear an increase of 6db sounds like a doubling of the output level. In Ableton nearly all faders, equalizers and parameters uses the decibel scale.
The problem is that you have a massive increase of the volume within the last 1/10 of the fader / rotary fader. This makes it hard to fine-tune the sound when you use Ableton for Dj'ing.
The typical DJ Mixers (e.g. the Pioneer DJM series) uses logarithmic faders inorder to compensate the logarithmic scale of decibel. Which means that if the fader is on 1/2 of the way you will have a 50% output level, on 9/10 of the way you will have a 90% output level. (A PA guy told this to me, some years ago. Hopefully it's right).
This makes it more easy to mix, because you have an optical feedback of the subjective volume level. Half of the faderway means half of the possible output level --> it avoids mistakes.

Is there a possibility to change the standard preferences of Ableton in a way that it behaves more like a dj mixer with linear increase of the output level?
If not it would be nice to put this on the wish list.

Thanks in advance

Bjoern
