MLR-style session view clip-chopping with monome and M4L

Post by two_masks » Thu Jan 07, 2010 10:21 am

(cross-posted to the monome forums here: http://post.monome.org/comments.php?Dis ... e=1#Item_1 )

I just uploaded a short proof-of-concept video demo of a Max for Live patch that allows MLR-style chopping of session view clips (with quantization) in Ableton Live:

http://vimeo.com/8590806

The patch is still very much in development, but the core functionality is there and working fairly well.

If anyone is interested in contributing to this effort, let me know! I actually just started teaching myself Max a few weeks ago, so I'm sure there are plenty of tricks I don't yet have up my sleeve. I'd also be happy to make the patch available in its current state to anyone that wants to try it out.

Long live monome and Max for Live!

Amazing work! One of my next projects was to create basically that functionality (except mapping it to the drumpads my RemoteSL, as I am far too poor for a monome). If you wouldn't mind, I'd LOVE to take a crack at your patch. Any improvements and modifications I'd be sure to pass back your way, of course. Either PM me a link to it or post it publicly, if you wouldn't mind! Again, great job.

This is awesome.. I really wanted to dig into MLR and then I opened it and was like.. "what?"

but this is perfect cause I'd rather keep my clips loaded in live than have to load them into MLR, I'll be checkin' back on this one for sure!

Good work! 8)

I'm assuming this would work fine with a LaunchPad? without too much fiddling around.

new edit.

Live Clip Chopper Myr r12

- now supports 64, 128h, 128v and 256.

- automatically resizes when you select the monome size from the live menu.

- turned it back to being horizontal, so x = track position y = track. gunna make this optional tho.

- clicking in a none playing row triggers the last played clip.

- cleaned up led output.

- cleaned up press

it's working really nice, got some big ideas for this.

thinking that the monome could be resizable accross tracks and scenes.
so we could have something like the red squared box of the launchpad or apc (gunna see if i can get the api call for that from LiveControl).

so with a 64 you could be triggering and beat chopping tracks 1 - 8 scene 1.
then switch to controlling tracks 1 - 4 but looking at scenes 1 and 2.
in this way choke groups would be really easily to implement.

also looking to add the ability for the tracks selected to change depending on where you are within the overall live clip matrix. so you could move the red box area around the clip and scene matrix like a clip launcher, triggering and chopping tracks on tracks 1 - 4 scenes 1 - 2 then maybe tracks 5 - 6 scenes 3 - 4.

maybe also a mode where only tracks with playing clips are displayed on the monome for chopping.

i'm thinking i am going to add an optional two rows of stops, records and functions, with and on/off and configuration in the gui.
it would take out two rows of tracks. but if you haven't got the spare monome space for a clip launcher and just want some basic clip launching and stopping functionality within the app then you can turn the extra functions rows on.

let me know what you think.

enjoy.

not without some edits - but other than that I don't see why not ;)

^ I mean there are monome emulators for the LP, so why not right? even the monome key's should do the trick, but what do I know

Is anyone working on a dumbed-down version that could learn midi, eg, from a nano-pad or something? I took a look at this, but I can't for the life of me figure out how this thing is telling the clip where to launch. Maybe it's just too damn late at night. :|

Rev. 20

- updated monome handling section to my new monome handling patch incorporating auto config, auto focus and manual config.

Going to start working on improving the track functionality and adding the optional function row now.
