Lexicon Omega and sound card question

Post by Fraeg » Sat Jan 16, 2010 12:17 am

sorry new to this, used search but didn't quite find an answer.

I will be recording guitar through a lexicon omega which then jacks into my PC via USB. My computer currently only has the generic sound card that is part of the motherboard. Question: Although I am jacking in via USB, the soundcard will still be processing the sound correct? Therefore I should invest in a decent/good PCI sound card correct???

reading other threads I get it that your sound quality is as good as your weakest link, which I would assume is the motherboards sound card (have decent head phones, monitor speakers will have to wait).

any feeback appreciated.

Oh and if anyone cares to recommend an actual sound card my price range is... well I could go as high $300 (400 if this the card will make me coffee), but would prefer to be in the $200 range.

Thank you for your time, cheers.

As long as you tell Live to use the Omega, everything will be processed through the Lexicon unit. Options>Preferences>Audio>Audio Device and selecting the Omega will ensure this.

I've used Lexicon audio interfaces and you will probably experience some issues with the driver. For some reason Ableton and the Lexicon drivers go out of sync and drop out (and/or sometimes produce a horrible digital screech) when recording, especially after periods of about 20 mins. Playback with the drivers isn't usually a problem. Ableton blames this on the Lexicon drivers and Lexicon says it's a problem with Live. If you go to Lexicon's forum you will see all kinds of whining about the drivers.

If you do have trouble I recommend getting ASIO4ALL and select that as the driver for the Omega in Live's preferences. Just make sure that ASIO4ALL is utilizing the Omega and has not defaulted to the internal soundcard.

Good luck.

great thanks for the feedback I appreciate it.

My brother has had great luck with lexicon omega, so I ordered one, been reading up on them and it sounds a bit iffy, oh well can always return it.

cheers.

Google-Fu complete

Reading is hard I know. However, >$1,000 is just a tad outside the range of the budget I mentioned now isn't it.

even there is some truth in it, i have a 300 dollar card since over 3 years and i am still very satisfied. i want be able to sell it for more then half, though that is probably true...

but for 300 - 600 dollar (e.g. presonus / motu / NI if you need it mainly for DJ-ing - performing) you get something pretty decent, of course i can always recommend going RME or metric halo if you can afford it.

and for 300 dollar the OPs price range, i always give the presonus firebox a double thumbs up.
