1. organize my plugins 2. delete automap plugs

hi everyone,

1. i want/need to organize my AU and VST plugins in ableton. so i tried to create folder like "synths" and "effects" etc in the osx finder. then i openden abelton, but i can't see the created folder in the ableton browser, it does't work. any idea or suggestion how i can organize my plug ins?

2. i have deleted some plugins that i don't use, but i still can see the automap version in lives plugin browser. is there any way to delete them??? i tried to find a way with the automap plugin manager, but there seems to be no delete" function.

my system: mac osx 10.5.8, live 8.1, novation automap 3.4 (latest version)

it's best to use the Automap plugin manager to un-Automap the plugs you are going to delete before you delete them...

if you don't do that, the only way i've found to clear them is to nuke the Automap preference files...

also, you can build your own folder structure in the Finder for VST plugs, but i think AU plugs all need to be in the one folder (then it's up to the host to organize them)...

thanks fishmonkey for your help. i know its not a very important problem, but anyway... i would be happy to clean up the plugin browser...

i tried everything you told: i disabled the plugins on automap, then i deleted them from my osx library.. and i also deleted the automap preferences... but i still can see the "deleted" plugins in the ableton browser and on the automap plugin manager

any other suggestion?

Rescan your plug ins with the ableton preferences (seems so obvious that you probably already did it).

it looks like Novation has changed the way the Automapped plugin info is stored since i last had to manually clear things out...

by the looks of it you should be able to delete the Automapped VSTs from your VST folder...

for the AUs, i think trashing "AUAutomapClient.component" from your Components folder should do the trick (i'm guessing that it's the file that has all the Automapped AU info in it)...

Slightly OT but I prefer automapping vst than au because they are all in a separate folder instead of doubling my list with normal / automap versions for the AUs.

be shure that you saved your personal automap plugins-settings and that you have a backup like timemachine.

Yes, AU's and VSTs work differently. In one Au plug-in you can have multiple plug-ins, like the U-He effects bundle. For VST you have one file per plug-in. So when the Automap manager activates automap versions, it puts them all into that one component file for the AUs. However for VSTs it makes one new VST for each plug-in and stores them initially in the user VST directory. So they are separate from the system VSTs.

As for organizing plug-ins: here's what I do:
I save VSTs as an instrument or effect rack and then keep them in the Ableton library, rather than load them from the plug-in browser. Saving as racks gives the advantage of being able to save you r plug-in configurations, so the order that the parameters are exposed. Now, for automap plug-ins, it's important that you move the automap versions from your user VST directory to your system VST directory, or else when you save them as a rack, they will open as the regular ones.

By the way, a cool advantage of using automap VSTs instead of autaomp AUs is that if you ever remove the automap VSTs, the regular ones load in their place with all settings maintained. AUs on the other hand will not load the regular ones if they're automap versions were loaded initially and then taken away.
