Whats the best custom build PC?
Looking to buy a new PC! Considered an iMac, decided against it!! Been looking at scan.co.uk and DARC computers but was wondering if anybody else had a suggestion! Need lots of fw ports as my current fw hub set up is not cutting it! Looking to spend no more than €1,500! Cheers

I would definitely recommend Scan. Their customer service and communication is outstanding and their systems are rock solid.

Thanks macmurphy! They look like powerful systems alright! Have you got one yourself?
Re: Whats the best custom build PC?
I had a good experience with cpusolutions.com. $1000 for an i7 920 with big drives, silent tower, 4GB RAM.

Yep. Using one right nowianomurchu wrote:Thanks macmurphy! They look like powerful systems alright! Have you got one yourself?
Even if you just use the site to configure it they'll get in touch with you about how you want drives partitioned, what to name them, any potential hardware/software conflicts etc
Probably the easiest way to do it is to pick one of their audio machines and call them to get it customised to your specs.

? maybe its an american/england thing.
If you say PC over here it means you are referring to a Windows based system. Macs are just called Macs.
If your are looking for windows based machines, it very easy to just spec one out and then buy the parts and build it yourself saving $$$ a good site is newegg.com

That's true, you can save money, but if something goes wrong somewhere down the line you're on your own.Fraeg wrote:? maybe its an american/england thing.

+1 to plucking up the courage to spec and build your own via someone like scan.

Re: Whats the best custom build PC?
Unless you really know what you are doing, and are willing to research any and all compatibility issues between parts, I think it is worth the $75 to have a company do the build.Fraeg wrote:If your are looking for windows based machines, it very easy to just spec one out and then buy the parts and build it yourself saving $$$ a good site is newegg.com
At cpusolutions, for example, you can select components from a list of components that are all known to work well together. Same is true for most any place that does custom builds.
When I ordered all the parts and built myself I ran into compatibility issues between my motherboard and some other component and ended up having to buy twice. Same happened with a couple other friends. It was just ignorance, but the solution to ignorance was to spend hours on the internet researching the right combinations of parts, then actually build it. I'd rather just pay someone to do it.
Re: Whats the best custom build PC?
I've always used stores like newegg.com or mwave.com where they bundle computer parts for compatibility. I built my daw for about $1500 US and at the time to buy something like mine was $3000. I actually bought all the parts from newegg / mwave paid a computer shop $250 to put it together and for the windows license. I'd rather have someone to blame after it was built if there was a problem.

well, I guess it really depends on how familiar you are with PCs. I think I build my first PC around 1997, it had a screaming 256megs of RAM IIRC.
I suppose it depends by what you mean "if something goes wrong". If my HD fails I would still need to replace it even if I had a Dell/HP/etc. I guess it is like working on cars, if you are comfortable and familiar with working on them it isn't such a big deal.
There are plenty of threads out there that will walk you step by step how to spec and build your PC.

The key is to stay a little behind the technology curve.... /shrug
