Is Live 8.1.1 backward compatible with 8.1.0?
Is Live 8.1.1 backward compatible with 8.1.0?
I know that 8.0.x and 8.1.x are not compatible, but are sub-versions within 8.1 compatible with one another? And do the 8.1.2 betas break compatibility with 8.1.1?
I'm trying to get versions synchronized with a collaborator, and he's trying to avoid going beyond 8.1.0 because it's stable for him.

Version 8.1.0 marked the beginning of the new file format so 8.1.1 should be compatible. It is also safe to say that Ableton will use this new format for all future releases until forther notice.
Re: Is Live 8.1.1 backward compatible with 8.1.0?
I tried saving a set in 8.1.2b3 and 8.1.1 refused to open it, saying that it was saved in a later version.

Thanks for this. I saw someone else suggest this in one of the beta threads, though it's not mentioned anywhere in the release notes for the betas. So it looks like 8.1.2 doesn't work with 8.1.1.ark wrote:I tried saving a set in 8.1.2b3 and 8.1.1 refused to open it, saying that it was saved in a later version.
Has anyone tried opening 8.1.1 sets in 8.1.0?

Doesn't work. And when it works its in rare cases between specific versions, as something will always be different a few versions down the line.zeitgeist wrote:zeitgeist wrote:

Backwards compatibility isn't a supported feature of Live.

This may or maynot be possible. I will try tonigh but expect that it will work.Has anyone tried opening 8.1.1 sets in 8.1.0?
This is not backward compatibility it's forward. Live support backward compatibility just fine. In other words you can certainly open an older version's set in the later version. You will not be able to open a set after 8.1 in an earlier version. Also, if you open an earlier ver's set in 8.1.x and save it, it will tell you that it has been done in an older version and ask you to "Save As" to the current version.Backwards compatibility isn't a supported feature of Live.

Are there any advantages to the new file format? I'm just wondering why it was changed. Excuse me if I missed comments related to this.

I'm assuming the 8.1 format was necessary to support M4L. But one additional nice feature of the 8.1 format is that it's now an XML format. Probably not as big of a deal now that M4L exists, but I'm sure some folks out there will come up with nice ways to take advantage of this (e.g., automating tasks on a large number of tracks at once, etc.).kramerica wrote:Are there any advantages to the new file format?
