Live 8 + External VST causing latency issues

Hi all. When I load an external soft synth in Ableton, it creates a lot of lag. Meaning when I press a note on my MIDI controller there is about a half second lag before it plays the note. Before loading external VSTs everything seems to work great. After loading an external VST, both the external VST as well as the internal instruments have this lag problem. Anyone have similar issues and/or know how to fix this?

In the audio tab of preference, set the audio buffer to a lower setting.
