How to use a sample and play it on my midi keyboard?

Post by Toneless » Wed Feb 17, 2010 2:00 pm

Hello :D

Maybe it's a funny question, but i really don't know, how to do that. I'd like to use some samples and what do i have to set up, so i can play that sample on my midi keyboard?

Thank you,
Tone

Pull a simpler or sampler from the device browser onto miditrack.
Pull a sample from the browser into the sampler/simpler.
Play the sample on your midi keyboard.

Well it certainly made me chuckle.

In the most basic package, Live is equipped with two samplers. Simpler and Impulse.

Assign one of these to a midi track (easiest way is to drag it in from the browser).

Simpler has a main window with the instructions "Drop Sample Here". Locate the sample you wish to use (either from the browser location or from a recorded audio clip) and drag and drop it into the box.

Impulse is exactly the same other than there are 8 boxes, though no written instructions.

If you have the Ableton Sampler installed, it works in pretty much exactly the same fashion.

You can also drag audio files into drum rack boxes (in which case an instance of Simpler is automatically assigned to that drum/midi note) as well as into instrument racks.

Simpler does not allow you to zone your samples to particular keys, however, if you assign Simpler to an instrument rack, you can zone samples.

Sampler, allows you to zone samples without having to use an instrument rack.

If you're still confused, read the manual or follow the excellent tutorials.

I have another question :D

When i load some sample into the sampler and i start playing it on keyboard and then higher than i go, the faster sample is played (tempo is faster), and same is with the lower notes, except it's played slower (slower tempo) :x why is that happening? is that normal? are there any settings to fix that?

Thank you,
Tone

That's normal in any sampler, you can however change pitch without changing the time if you play the sample in an audio track.

It is a feature request that has been made many times for Ableton Samplers, however, it's not materialised yet. Here's hoping......

Assuming you want the sample to playback the same regardless of the note/key pressed.....
Within Sampler, set 'Scale' to 0%
