I got ableton, got controllers, learned how to DJ, got myself a good DJ set ready to play live... so now what?

Where do I DJ? for who?

at the moment i'm fairly limited to playing house music, because thats all that i've warped and edited in to live.

How do i get gigs, what kind of gigs are out there for DJ's
Dance Clubs and Bars are an option, but I'm 19 and cant even get into most (21+) places that DJ's play.

Any Idea's?

I think i'm gonna throw a party at my apartment as my first pseudo gig, but i was wondering if any one had some advice on how to shamelessly self promote my self as a DJ

sounds like you are on it.....no one is gonna book you unless they hear what you sound like.

House/College parties are great, make a shit ton of demo CD's and give them to everyone at the end of the night when they are headed home or to their rides. Get a soundcloud and post demos there....keep practicing and get in a circle of people who already gig. Ask to open for them even if it's for 30 minutes....keep practicing....don't expect to get paid, be happy if you do.....unless that's why you are doing it.....

we did it in another way

find a location you can get for a weekend (in the woods or indoor)
involve some friends help you to set up the thing (barkeeper, doormens)
make some flyer and throw them out on special places with special people
rent a soundsystem and generator and tell the police that you organised somebodys
birthday and - that too much people then invited swapped the place

keep it privat!

if it work with 100-200 people - plan the next GIG
do that 5-10 times and soon enough there will be others
dont hassle with them - make friends and get invited for DJing

i dont know how dangerous such actions are in US for people under 21

but mainly the described way is a good one in europe !

The party is a great idea, try to offer something different to make you stand out.
