ableton speaker setup

Post by spacedoutbad » Tue Feb 23, 2010 5:50 pm

so my friend and i just started a band. we dont have a drummer yet so weve just been messing around. i want to use ableton on my laptop to trigger drum loops while we play. i have the loops made and setup but im not sure the best way to play them. it needs to be loud enough to be heard over my guitar and his bass. i was thinking just to get a 1/8 to 1/4 adapter and plug my laptop into an amp? but im pretty sure this isnt the best way. what would be the best way to set this up if were on a cheapest shit you can do budget (but still want to do it right)?

The cheapest way would be to run your laptop sound out, like you said. Its not gonna sound great run through a guitar amp. You'd be better off sending it to a PA/Monitor or even a home stereo. Once you have some $ to throw at it, pick up an audio interface to replace your laptop soundcard and use that to send your output.

i already have an interface with a 1/8" out and powered speakers out. but the only speakers i have right now are some shitty desktop speakers and im not sure if theyre going to be loud enough. and monitors that arent total shit are pretty expensive.

you are only talking about practicing right? hook it up to a spare guitar amp, its not going to sound great but it will keep you guys in time

plus, you will be ultra pumped when you play your first show run it through the house PA and it will sound way better
