Why do arrangement tracks go silent when launching clips?

Post by comradec » Tue Mar 02, 2010 2:01 am

Working in the Arrangement View, I imported some MIDI tracks into Live from a song I'd originally programmed on another sequencer, and I assigned VST instruments to them.

Next I switched to Session View, created an audio track and experimented with various drum loop samples. I placed some of those loops in the clips on that audio track.

Then I stopped playback in order to start the song again. But I started this time by launching one of the clips.

Suddenly all of the MIDI tracks go silent and I can't figure out what's caused them to shut up. They are still there. The track appears to be progressing, but I can't hear the MIDI tracks now.

I'm sure it's probably something very obvious but I've got a mental block on this one. How do I get the non-clip MIDI tracks to play back again?

This has happened a few times now and I spend 10 minutes trying to figure it out before switching over to my hardware synth workstation and giving up on Live.

Any tips would be most appreciated.

press the big red button in the middle of the transport bar, the one called "back to arrangement".

Just to expand, a given track can only play clips from either the Session or the Arrangement page. So launching a clip in Session overrides the clip in Arrangement. Thus the Back to Arrangement button. HTH

might not be possible but I'd be cool for live performace stuff to be able to play stuff in both

you can, but you'll probably need an apc or launchpad.
I do this by keeping the stuff I want to play in arrange view on sep tracks to the stuff I want in session view.
(in my case video clips in arrange)
I place markers at strategic play points, then midi map them to keyboard notes, so when I hit certain keys
the play point in arrange goes there respectively.
(take note that I'm not intending to play any vsti's, so I can use the keyboard, unless you want to mute the arrange tracks to actually play synths etc)
my launchpad always keeps the session clips visual, even when I look at the arrange page.

now I stay in arr view, push play and use the keyboard to jam the video, while I drop beats, clips etc from session via
my launchpad.
hope this makes sense 8)

The big red button did the job. Thanks.

Knew it would be staring me in the face.
